Chapter 1

Grand Falls, Texas

~ beep, beep, beep ~

My alarm goes off at 5:30 like every other day. It is time for me to get up and get ready for class. Currently I am an intern midwife. I can't wait to become a Nurse Midwife. Assisting in bringing a human being that will be full of curiosity and wonder into the world just brings a smile to my face. It makes waking up at 5:30 a little less miserable.

I finally roll out of my bed and slug my way into the bathroom. I turn on the sink faucet and I let the cool water fall into the sink. I cup my hands and splash the cold water onto my face. Once I feel a bit more energized I take the towel off of its holder and pat it on my face. I yawn as the soft fabric absorbs the water droplets off of my face. Not only does this little morning ritual give me a first morning boost, but it also lets me start of my day feeling clean. The next step to the Laura Easten morning care plan is to go in the kitchen and pop a bagel into the toaster. Get out the butter, butter knife, eggs, and non-stick cooking spray. I find my pan and I start to spray it with the cooking spray. There isn't much left in the can so it unevenly splatters into the pan. I take a paper towel to spread the spray around. I go to crack an egg in to the pan and realize I am on my last egg. "Time to go shopping I guess," I sigh to myself as I take the egg out of its Styrofoam holder.

I click the egg against the pan and get it to crack. As a pull apart the shell the egg white and yolk slime its way out of the shell, and perfectly plopping into the pan. I turn on the flame on the stove and I started cooking my egg. As the egg sizzled in the pan my bagel popped from the toaster. As I was shifting around in my quaint kitchen I heard Megan's bedroom door open.

"Getting ready to leave?" she inquired.

"Sorry, did I wake you?" I replied. I always feel terrible if I wake her up. She gets back late sometimes because of her business internship, so waking up at 5:30 isn't ideal for her.

"No, you are fine. Well, as long as you give me half of that bagel."

"Deal."

I flipped my egg in the pan and sprinkled it with some cheddar cheese, it is basically the only way I will eat it. Then, I went back to my bagel, buttering both slices, and sliding a piece across the breakfast bar to Megan. She stopped it with her hand and with a tired yawn brought the piece of bread to her mouth.

"Thanks," she yawned, "What will you be doing at your internship today?"

"I never know. Just what ever happens to fly into the schedule. I hope it isn't anything boring like inventory for cloths and more," I have never been a big fan of inventory. You just stand there counting and recording, then counting and recording. I almost got side tracked, but I quickly slipped the spatula underneath the egg and plopped it onto my half of a bagel. I then slid to the silverware drawer, extracting a fork and a knife from the drawer. I carefully walked over to the breakfast bar with my plate and sat by Megan, who still could barely keep her eyes open.

"You better go back to sleep after I am gone," I demanded.

"You don't have to worry about that. That is the first thing on my agenda," she replied in a tired tone.

"Good," I stop talking and start cutting my open face egg sandwich into small pieces. I stabbed one of the pieces with my fork and gracefully put in my mouth and slid it off the fork. The bagel was perfectly cook, just lightly golden, and egg was fried to perfection. I don't mean to blow my own horn, but every since I was little I loved cooking, and was always pretty good at it. Though, I can't take all the credit. I learned from the best, my mom. I glanced over at the microwave and saw what time it was. I start to shovel the bagel and egg into my mouth. It was already 6:00 and I still needed to get dressed. As soon as I took every bit off of the plate I hopped from the seat an set the plate into the sink. After that I quickly picked up my glass and washed down everything with some water. I made sure the flame was off before I rushed into my bedroom, yanking open my closet door to take out my clothes.

As I was rushing to get changed and at the same time attempting to brush my teeth I hear Megan call, "I will put everything away, you just worry about getting to you internship on time!"

"I love you!" I shouted in a gargled voice, due to the tooth paste foam in my mouth we all know so well. I soon as I spat and rinsed I slid my shoes on and was out the door with I one last, "Thank you so much! I love you!" to Megan.

I can't tell you enough good things about Megan. She is literally the best friend anyone could every ask for. She is very sweet, caring, and kind. She always has your back. Even when she is so dead tired from getting home late she is still willing to help me out in the morning. Is that loyalty or what?

I started up the mini van and carefully pulled out of the drive way. And with in an hour I was on my way to another exciting day of my internship.
