"Wait until you see the island! Agea is a most beautiful paradise that I will reign" my fiancé's voice filled the empty space between us. I softly brushed my long black curls and stared at my reflection in the small mirror that stood before me. I turned to look at my fiancé. He stood tall and proud by the window, his blonde hair flowing with the breeze and his blue eyes gleaming with eagerness.
"You said I again, Guillermo" I said, my face emotionless. I was used to his selfish ways.
Although I was his soon-to-be wife, he never considered me in his life. I was just the woman who was supposed to keep him company for the rest of his life.
"Of course you will be queen by law after we marry, but darling a queen does not rule over a country" he said walking over to me and placing his head beside mine. I looked at his reflection in the mirror.
He was a handsome man, but not my choice for a husband. My father had been the one to set up my marriage to him before my father tragically died. He wanted me to be married to a wealthy man so that I would never struggle in life. I sighed and put my brush down. I stood up and walked towards the bed.
"A queen is existent only to provide love and children to her king" he continued. I looked down at the bed and frowned.
"Of course Guillermo. I should not have spoken against you, it was foolish of me to think otherwise" I said softly.
"Next time just smile and look appealing" Guillermo said as he smiled victoriously and stepped out of the room without another word. I walked over to the window and looked up at the blue, cloudless sky.
"Father, I know you meant me no harm but I wish you never betrothed me off for interest" I said to the sky. "I wished for a love match, you should have known I wasn't interested in the material things of life" I said sadly.
"Miss. Cornelia?" a voice behind me said suddenly. I jumped up and turned around, my face turning a deep shade of red. "I apologize, it was not my intention to interrupt you" my maid Alicia said. I shook my head.
"Do not worry about it" I said shaking my earlier thoughts away. "What was the reason for which you wanted me?" I asked quickly.
"The boat has arrived, your fiancé seeks your company as you unboard" she said. I nodded.
"Very well" I said and quickly picked up all of our belongings with Alicia's help. We stepped into the hot summer sun and watched as the boat was tied to a pole.
People crowded the shore, cheering loudly as Guillermo greeted them with a smile and wave.
"Cornelia love, come here and greet our people" he said extending his arm towards me. I handed the bags I was carrying to a nearby sailor and walked over to Guillermo. I smiled and waved at all of the strangers that crowded the shore.
The sailors placed a board on the sand next to the boat so that we could step off of the boat without slipping. Guillermo hopped down, smiling at me as lovingly as he did on the day we first met. Guillermo was not a completely terrible person, he had his moments that made me love him more.
I blushed and looked at the sand beneath my feet as he gently helped me onto the shore.
"Come, I must introduce you to the royal family and show you the island" he said gently tugging me along as he began walking. We walked towards a stone path and spoke as we walked past huts where the people came out to watch us walk by.
"The people are thrilled to have us here" he said. "We must keep them happy" Guillermo continued. I smiled and waved as a small boy peeked around his mothers legs to catch a glimpse of us.
Armed soldiers on horses rode not far behind us and soldiers on foot walked in front of us. If people were so thrilled to have us here, why did we need so much protection? I bit my tongue and held in the question. Obviously every figure of authority had some enemies, right?
