𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇 𝟐𝟐 - 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚, 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY, THERE WAS A TALE ABOUT SOULMATES. humans were born with two arms, two legs, and two heads. they were prideful, even daring to threaten the gods.

they threatened to conquer the gods and become the new ones, thus angering many of them. zeus and many of the other gods wanted to kill all the humans with a zap of lighting as they had done with the titans, but if they did that, then who would worship them?

and so zeus split the body in half and placed each part on different sides of the world. the humans became depressed. they were in pain, their sides cut open and missing their other half. apollo, the god of music, truth, prophecy, healing, and light could not bear to see them like this, and so he sewed them up, healing their pain and leaving a navel to remember their other half.

for vampires, having multiple soulmates was rare, not uncommon but extremely rare.

and every vampire she had encountered—aka the cullens— had said that soulmates were a wonderful thing.

but diana couldn't understand. why would they lie to her?

in the three days that she'd been there, not once had her soulmates visited her. she didn't understand— it was supposed to be magical, right? she tried to excuse them— perhaps they were busy?

but it didn't make sense, surely their soulmate came before any sort of work? or at least, that's what rosalie had told her.

she just wanted to speak to them. to hear their voices. diana mentally cursed herself for not paying attention while they spoke to the cullens.

speaking of them, they had long left two days ago. she was sure they had arrived in forks safely and was happy for them but she couldn't shake the small sadness in her stomach that they left her here.

surely they had no choice in it? she doubted they would've just willingly left her. perhaps her soulmates ordered them to leave her there. diana knew it was wrong, but if they had then she would've been somewhat happy.

it meant that they did want her.

but if they wanted her, why weren't they with her?

she understood, they were kings, of course, they couldn't be with her every minute of every day, but she had been trapped in this dammed room her entire stay here.

she hadn't left once, and sure, at first, she could just say "perhaps they don't want her to be eaten?" but as the days pass by and she sees human workers pass by the door, she began to believe it less and less.

diana sighed softly, her book shut with a small thump. the adoptive swan swore she had read almost every book in the room. well, that was an exaggeration but still.

the bedroom had a door connected to the bathroom. it wasn't small diana was sure it was probably one of the largest rooms in the castle. the walls were white, and the room itself was a mixture between gold and white.

the bathroom followed the same color pattern. diana slightly hated the way the room was out together, the furniture seemed to mock her with the way it was placed. of course, diana was grateful, but as someone who wanted to decorate houses when she finally graduated, it wasn't helping.

still, she pursed her lips and walked into the bathroom. it was fully stocked with her things, all brand new. it seemed the kings had taken care of it, which was something she was grateful for. it meant that at least they were thinking of her.

guards stood at her door, none willing to speak to her but occasionally shooting her looks of pity that diana couldn't pick apart. things all felt surreal and as she exhaled through her nose, tilting her head back under the shower, she smiled slightly.

sure, the kings hadn't been around but it could've just been kingly duties. maybe this was the beginning of her happy ever after.

maybe, just maybe, she would be able to finally be happy. after all, they were her soulmates, were they not?

the whole shower she imagined scenarios of her newly found soulmates.

aro and her walking through a field of flowers, or maybe a garden. it would be sunny out and the rays would hit her face perfectly, and then aro would turn to her and lean down.

or perhaps her and caius painting, and caius would smile down at her before continuing his painting. his blonde hair would be neatly pulled back into a small man bun and he'd have a ghost of a smile on his face as he watched her from the corner of her eye, paint smeared on her face.

and marcus, her brunet soulmate, they'd wander the halls together as he speaks of the history of the volturi. diana wouldn't be paying attention—she'd never really found a point in history, but it was cool she supposed— instead just staring at him and smiling softly. marcus would tell her to close her eyes and guide her through the halls, bringing her to a painting. she'd open them, thoroughly surprised with a painting of her and marcus wandering around, her in his arms and caius secretly hiding within the halls to paint it.

as she stepped out and onto the tiled floor, diana couldn't help but smile as she thought of her soulmates.

it was going to be beautiful.

when the human was finally finished dressing, she walked out and into her room, heading straight for a window that overlooked a garden.

it was a beautiful sight really, the garden had tall hedges and flowers dancing around, her favorite she supposed was probably a small white daisy that she could barely see but was sure it would've been gorgeous upfront. the daisy seems freshly bloomed and though she can't see it that well, diana was sure it was beautiful.

but her small moment is ruined as she watches caius walk through the garden hedges. she perks up, happy to finally catch a glimpse of one of the kings.

but she notices someone on his arm, he's looking down at the female with love in his eyes. diana purses her lips, watching as they walk through the garden, twirling.

the woman had blonde hair, she looked like an angel. her skin was pale, close to being full white and her red eyes traveled against his face. caius smiled, leaned down and pecked her lips before picking her up in another twirl.

and then diana's eyes filled with tears and suddenly it made sense.

she walked slowly to her bed, crawling in and staring blankly ahead. it finally made sense as to why the kings didn't visit her, why they barely glanced her way.

they were married. diana scoffed slightly. of course, they were married.

of course, her happily ever after was ruined by something she should've known.
