━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

the spring air was beautiful on her skin as she hummed. it shone and glistened in the sunlight, a sight to behold. it was the same sight that had caught the attention of marcus volturi.

she was crouching next to a daisy, her black hair sprawled out around her. the king's eyes raked down her face. diana's eyes were closed but it didn't take away from her beauty any less. her eyebrows were furrowed as she seemed to be thinking of something but her red-painted lips seemed to twitch upward like she could sense he was near.

marcus pursed his lips, deciding to approach her. he couldn't help it- the need to be next to her. it started as an itch in his hand, moving up to his heart. it was like he physically wanted to rip it out and itch it until it stopped.

he sighed. it was a shock for diana swan when she felt the presence of someone next to her. one eye peeked open, both opening as soon as she caught brunet hair of marcus.

"you know, i was married." he began. diana's eyes widened. was? diana had thought he was still married. she couldn't help but wonder what happened to his wife.

"her name was didyme. she was aro's sister." he chuckled loosely. speaking about the two at the same time made him want to squirm. "aro was so angry when he found out we created a mate bond."

diana had to pause. she hadn't known that mate bones could be created. she frowned, her red painted lips pulling down into a frown unbeknownst to the vampire king. the swan knew she'd have to do more research-specifically on mate bonds.

marcus had his eyes closed like he was reminiscing himself. "i don't remember how me and her met. all i knew is we met when i was human, just before i was turned. i hadn't known her until after aro turned her because i didn't remember most of my human life-i still don't-,"

"but that day, unbeknownst to us, we had formed a mate bond. aro was off his rails when he found out. you wouldn't have been able to tell if you didn't know him- but we had known each other for years and i could tell."

diana was reminded that she didn't know aro. not truly. if he was angry, would she know? it never failed to amaze her how little she knew about her soulmates.

"and then we found caius and dora, and we formed the volturi. me and didyme had wanted to leave. only for a little- we swore we'd be back. didyme just wanted to explore." his head hung low, and though it hurt, diana knew with everything in her being that marcus had-still, loved her.

"but aro didn't see it that way. aro saw it as us leaving forever." his voice caught in his throat, gulping back the venom. "he killed her." his voice was a mere mutter, something best unheard.

and suddenly, her hand found his. her fingers wrapping around his, entwining in a dance that could only end fatally.

and marcus let himself drown in the comfort of his mate, memories of what could be flooding his head.

but then the thoughts of didyme came back. the memory of her sitting exactly where they were, her hand entwined with his and he was up in a flash, his spot only leaving a gust of air.

and diana's hand came down onto the ground next to the daisy, a scream of rage emitting from the unwanted.

she heaved a sob as her heart broke farther, the once strong girl breaking down into gasps of air.

and diana had come to terms with what she was. suddenly, she understood them. she understood what she was. 𝐀 𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐃 𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐈𝐂𝐄.
