Ava
Skip forward, and it's the beginning of their seventh grade year. Ava and Kyle are being driven home by Ms. Blend, and they're going fast because Ava has dance in 10 minutes.
"What do we have for homework?" Kyle asks, digging through his bag. He looks confused, thinks Ava. But he's sitting in the front seat, so she is t sure. Whatever the case, he doesn't know that Ava stole his math book from him yet.
"Math pages 23-27. It's 65% of our grade," she says. Kyle now looks more panicked.
"I don't have my book," he says.
Suddenly, they are jerked forward. Ava's head slams into the seat in front of her. Somebody screams, and the airbag turns on so quickly she is thrown backwards. The person is still screaming. She looks over at Kyle dimly. She tries to turn away, wishing she hadn't. Kyle looks so absolutely terrible that she starts sobbing. His head is twisted to the side, his eyes closed, lips blue. In her haze, she remembers that the one who always dies in car crashes are the people in the front seat. And that's the last thing she remembers before her mind fades to darkness.

"Ava," says Kyle. He looks at her with a smirk. She guesses it's sixth grade, based on Kyle's crazy gelled up hair.
"Yeah?" she says. Help me! Why am I stuck in this memory? I wish it never happened... But she can't close her eyes or turn away.
She remembers that she thought he looked so handsome with the collared shirt rolled up.
So, she leaned in and kissed him. His eyes were open in surprise. Then they closed as he smiled. She pulled away and ran.
"Ava," someone said.
"She's in a minor coma. She'll be out of it in a day or so."
"Ava!" cries the voice again.
She wants to say, "What? What's going on? Why is this happening to me?" But she can't. She can't even open her eyes. She can't move her finger or leg.
"Ava, honey," sobs the voice again. She recognizes it as her mom.
There is nothing to do but wait.

She opens her eyes. The walls are white. Monitors beep.
She is awake.
"Ava!" sobs her mom. "Oh, sweetie," she starts, and bursts into tears.
"Where's Kyle and Mrs. Blend?" Ava says after hugging.
"Oh, honey," Mrs. Danan says.
"What?"
"Kyle... he's..."
That's all Ava hears before darkness. Kyle is dead.
