pep rally

NATE WHEELER ACTUALLY was the typical school jock, or that's what he thought about himself, he played in the school's basketball team, had a somewhat nice car, and had more than half of Hawkins' female population behind him —even though he didn't even exchange gaze with any of them on purpose.

Probably the most interesting thing about him was the fact the guy he was having multiple flings with had died at hands of a multidimensional creature, the Mind Flayer, well, maybe the fact that he knew about the hell that hid below Hawkins.

Well, he didn't know if it was a good thing to know about it.

Because he envied his classmates, he envied most people at Hawkins, because maybe he wasn't as cliché as them but at least they didn't have nightmares, because they all didn't know the reasons behind all the disappearances and deaths that had been occurring since 1983, because most of them weren't scared of the once somewhat happy town Hawkins was, or maybe it never was and all the events that snatched his innocence along with the ones of all the people involved.

He sighed, hearing the song the band was playing and how cheerful people seemed to be. He stood next to Lucas, just behind Jason. Nate refused to participate in this but that's what he got for being part of the team and being held back a year and not graduating when he was supposed to. And not only that, the colleges that retired their offers because they only wanted responsible students, so Nathaniel Wheeler wasn't leaving Hawkins anytime soon, pure crap as he said.

The music stopped and Jason started jogging towards the paper curtain which he ripped, Nate just behind him, plastering the most charming smile he could.

"Let's hear it for you, Tigers!"

He heard the cheers and the 'woos' as they came into scene, his eyes drifting to his brother and Dustin, to Robin who clearly was stealing glances at the redhead next to her.

"Good morning, Hawkins High!" Jason screamed into the microphone to all the cheering people. "First off, hey... First off I'd like to thank each and every one of you. Without your support we wouldn't be here." He pointed between the public. "Give yourselves a big hand!"

Their enthusiasm reminded him of when Steve, King Steve was the one giving this speech. "And of course, no — of course, I have to give a special shout-out to the best and the prettiest fans of all time," he points to the cheerleading squad, "The Tiger Cheer Squad."

Nate patted Lucas' back, offering a smile because he knew his friends weren't that happy that he joined the team. "Chrissy..."  Jason said as he pats his chest, Nate almost puked. "Chrissy, I love you, babe."

   "Aww."

Nate honestly couldnt wait for this to be over. "You know... I speak for all of us when I say it's been a tough year for Hawkins," now Nate's smile slowly creeped into a frown as his blue eyes stared at the back of Jason's head. He knew where Jason was going, did he expect him to have the balls to? Of course not. "So much loss."

   Fucking dickwad.

"And sometimes I wonder, 'How much loss can one community take?" Jason questions himself, "In dark days like this, we need something to believe in. So, last night, when we were down by ten points at half to Christian Academy, I looked at my team," now Nate was nauseous. "And I said, 'think of Jack.'"

"Think of Melissa, think of Heather."

Nate seriousle felt nauseous now, his ears ringing a little bit thanks to the knot in his throat.

"Think of Billy," now he was the one who felt Robin and Steve's stare, but he only looked at Max between the heads of people, and when he found her she was just looking down. Jason was a complete imbecile. They didn't die to be mentioned in some shitty pep rally for some shitty basketball game.

"And think about our heroic Police Chief, Jim Hopper," now this, was crap. Nate bit the inside of his cheek, blinking out the tears forming in his eyes. "Think about everyone of our friends who perished in that fire." the Carver boy's voice got louder. " What did they die for?" For us to lose to some... some crap school? No!"

Sometimes it made Nate mad that he was part of the small group of people that knew the truth, because ignorance sometimes seemed more appealing to him. Honestly? Nate could punch Jason in that very moment.

"For us to return home with our heads hung low in defeat? No!" Jason
shouts as others did the same, Nate getting angrier as each second passed by. "No. Let's win this game. Let's win this game for them' exactly what we did!" everyone cheered, making the Wheeler boy to clench his jaw.  "We embarrassed those candy-asses in their own house, and now tonight, tonight, we re going to bring home the championship trophy!" He shouts as everyone cheers, "Let's go!"

People started leaving, only the basketball team and the cheerleading squad remaining in the gym as they talked amongst themselves, Nate made his way to the exit until he felt a hadn grabbing his shoulder. He shrugged it off harshly as he turned around.

"Nate, dude, where are you going?" Jason said, and the only thing Nate wanted at that very moment was to erase that smile with a punch.

The Wheeler boy scoffed and stared at Jason in desbelief. "Do you want my opinion on your speech?" Jason tried to talk. But Nate cut him off. "What the fuck was that?" he could feel Lucas' stare on him, as well as the rest of the team's.

"Dude, I know Hargrove was your best friend but—"

"Don't 'dude' me, fuck off man, honestly," Nate deadpanned as he continued his way to the doors.

Oh, his best friend Billy Hargrove.
