Feel the colours around you
Written by: Peehu Tiwari

It was a usual Friday morning. The sun's blessings felt a little too warm. I could hear the birds singing their lullaby and trees shaking theirbranches. Creating such a melody that one would never want to leave their bed. Oh my god this comfort, this scene, this, I don't want to leave
this place, but I have to. I have to face the real world; I have to leave my comfort zone. Ohh I hate this. But I have to do this daily. I groaned as
I did my morning stretch. Moving toward the kitchen counter I heard my neighbor Mrs. Smith scolding her kids for messing with our garden. It
didn't bother me really; the truth be told, it didn't matter to me. Finally, I was on my favourite part of the day; I was making my honey lemon tea.

Everything was kept in its usual place, yeah everything was organized and it helped me a lot. Turning off the kettle and pouring my tea into a cup, I decided to listen to some music. This was perfect, me sitting on my couch, with my honey lemon tea, listening to relaxing music. And how relaxed I was, the scent of lemon filled the room and honey balanced the sourness which was tickling my mouth. Leaving this comfort and my
home behind, after a shower, I found myself on the way to my workspace. I could hear the crunching sound of leaves which were maybe scattered on
my path, to welcome me. I was working for a group or community of people that help the
needy and spread social awareness. Today we were doing a social experiment that would unfold the creative, little, minds of children. We were going to ask the children to explain colours to a blind person. We wanted to observe their
behaviour, thoughts, and expressions.....it was kind of an experiment.

Sitting on the couch with some crayons I heard I voice of a little human.
So...you can't see? The little boy said in a questioning manner. Hmm, he was a boy, at least that's what I was told. Yes, I can't see. I am blind
and that is why I am here. I answered the question. Mmhm, much to my amusement.....just kidding I
wasn't, the boy started asking more questions.

So you don't see anything? This was the fifth time he asked me this silly question. Wasn't my confession convincing to him? Yeah, I wouldn't completely blame him. If I had my vision and was asked to explain colours to a blind person, I would go nuts. If I was that lucky I guess. And you even can't feel colours, that's what I have heard at least. 'So little man, can you explain to me the colour around you?' I asked hoping that his answer wouldn't turn into another question. Let's see if that's possible. 'Which colour do you want me to explain to me first?' ohh so yhh it was not possible that this kid would answer my question without turning it into another question. Yeah, ten
minutes in this experiment and I was already having so much fun. Great. 'Which colour am I holding now?' I asked holding a crayon. 'Red 'he
replied. 'Okay, so what crosses your mind when see this color?' I asked preparing my ears for the
answer. 'Blood' now that replay did take me off guard. 'Well, that's horrible and spooky and....well anything else you can think of?' okay now I was the one asking questions. 'Apple' that's better. 'Apples! So do you like apples you know an apple a day keeps the doctors away' YesI served him the most used line. 'My mom is a doctor but she forces me to eat apples.' Okay maybe that explains the blood or maybe he loves watching action movies I have heard they use a lot of blood. 'Bye miss and you really can't see? Goodbye with a question, sure thing that the kid is feeling pranked right now. And honestly, I was feeling the same way. Bye young man and assure you I can't see.' That kid was a weird one or maybe I was the weird one.

The second kid entered the room humming or maybe muttering something. 'Hello,' I said to start a conversation.' Hi,' she replayed. After introducing myself and asking her to explain colours to me, I asked her to sit beside me. She took a moment to think something and then she
said' I don't how to explain colors to you, you know like you can't see anything, it's not like colors have some definition, so I am a bit
confused.' 'I know it's a bit weird and confusing but maybe you can tell me about what crosses your mind when you hear the name or see these
colours'. 'I think I can try that' the girl replied. 'Okay, what comes to mind when see you the color red.? Please don't be blood, please don't
blood. I was repeating this like a mantra after the question. Something about the word' blood sends chills down my spine.' Rose' yep that was
the replay and a good answer. 'But you haven't seen a rose; you haven't enjoyed its beauty, so that's not a good answer.' Yeah I haven't seen its
beauty, and I have heard that it's beautiful, she made a point. The third kid was also a girl. She came into the room giggling and soon the room
was filled with giggles. Something about her presence was different, I could feel her aura, it was light and comfy, and there was softness. She
sat beside me and she lingered her small, little fingers on my hand, and her touch relaxed me.' Hey, miss she said in a whisper. Her voice melted in
my ears like caramel. 'Hey sweetie' I said to greet her. 'Can you explain to me the colours around you?' I asked my usual question. 'I don't think so
that I can explain the colours, but I can make you feel the colours around you.' Huh interesting,

'yeah I totally love to feel colors around me.' wouldn't miss that chance for anything. 'Okay so,
can you explain to me the colour red?' 'Rose' 'Yeah I have heard that before but I didn't feel anything' I thought. 'Rose' she continued, 'when look at the color red you feel the beauty of a rose'. 'Haven't you received any roses ever?' she asked. 'Uh, I have but... .' 'But you never felt its
beauty, did you? I don't know but I couldn't answer that interruptive question. 'You never felt the gentleness of its petals; you never
enjoyed the powerful aroma that fills your nose when you sniff it and the pain when you prick yourself with its spines. When you look at colour red you feel beauty, power and pain at the same time. That was the perfect answer I could ever ask for. 'That's perfect' I replied, letting my breath out. And now I was greedy. 'Can you explain to me more colour, I mean can you make me feel more colour? 'Yeah I can try that, blue feels like ice, cold, it's made of water but yet it is rigid. Blue colour represents winter, and people say that winter represents sadness. So while looking at the blue you feel coldness, softness, rigidness and sometimes sadness. While yellow provides you the warmth of the sun and the tingle of lemon. Orange feels tangy just like a tangy orange. Pink feels like the touch from your parents. Green is everything that's around you trees, people, flowers, animals, birds, basically green is nature. White provides softness, peace freeness like the sky. And black is comfort or safety that you feel while you drape a blanket around you.'

'Sorry miss but can't say anything anymore, I am getting thirsty.' And after that sentence, I realised that I was lost in the feels of the colours. 'Yes dear, you did a great job'. Thank you so much.' With being said the interview was over, my shift was over, now a new person would chance to feel the colours around him. If he is that lucky I guess. I was at home feeling the beauty of red as I bought some flowers on my way back from the office. I was feeling blue through the cold breeze that was coming through an open window. I was feeling the warmth and tingling of yellow through my honey lemon tea. I also tasted or you can say felt some oranges. I felt the pink through
the sweater that was knitted by my mother. I could feel the green as I could hear the sound of the shaking trees. I felt black and white because I was at my home. Today I felt that the world is so colorful. Today I felt the colors around me. And tomorrow I am going to talk to Mrs. Smith's
kids and I will ask them not to ruin it because I want to feel its beauty.
