Prologue: A New Light
—————
Another day ended as another hour of the night began. The lights of several homes turning off, people getting ready to head right to their beds. Some working long hours just getting home from the day's work.
Clear with exhaustion as their minds heavy. The lights of a certain building also started to retire to another long night. Children getting dressed into their nightwear
Caretakers closing off windows and doors to avoid intrusion from any unwanted guests. Curtains fluttering high up before settling back down.
Many children asleep at this point. A few still up and about while some chatting with their bunk-buddies.
The head of the management also having taken care of the day's work, had been packing to go back home for a much needed rest.
She having packed and ready to go, gave last instructions to the caretakers before proceeding to pick up her black umbrella.
It was said to rain tonight - as such following the said weather warning - she began to make her way out with the caretakers assuring her that it would be alright and well if she had rested.
I mean– after continuous work for so many days would surely exhaust any at all. The head really did deserve a break. After all, taking care of 44 children, managing their expense at your own dollars - asides the little donation they receive every once in while - is certainly not an easy job.
The head lady not long after reached the front door and with a small twist of the lock and knob, she let in the cold breeze. The woman was thankful to have brought a coat with her. She stepped out and took a final look inside before closing the door with a light thud.
She turned her body around, holding her briefcase close, then made her way down the odd number of doorsteps.
The building she walked out of was old but well furnished. It was sandwiched between two houses— equally old — The moonlight reflected on the long window panels and gave the building a much more ethereal atmosphere.
The lady reached the bottom within mere seconds and she didn't expect was a surprise for she had expected a cold breeze.
But no instead she was met with the sight of a basket.
A plain basket with nothing in particular that was interesting. Inside the basket, what appeared to be something fully covered with a light grey clothe atop.
The lady blinked processing the sight in front of her.
Is she seeing hallucinations from the lack of sleep?
She rubbed one of her eyes before staring back at the object before her.
A twitch was seen at the surface of the clothe.
No, no, it couldn't have been the wind for it had stopped blowing a moment ago leaving the tense irry of the cold temperature behind.
The lady put down both her possessions — the briefcase and her umbrella — then fully turned her attention to the basket. She slowly and carefully crouched down to pick the basket up into her arms with such care as though it was a bomb ready to explode any minute.
She held the basket from the bottom keeping it close to her chest. She felt the basket emit warmth and hesitantly grabbed onto the edge of the clothe and with a quick swipe of her hand, she removed the clothe.
Revealed right before her eyes was a young child, barely 3 months old.
The young born's body made a few movements here and there —probably from the sudden drop of temperature— the child whimpered, frowned and furrowed it's brows till it sat itself in a comfortable position once again.
The lady widened her eyes a tad bit more then it already was.
How could someone be so cruel to drop a baby outside with nothing but clothes and a blanket to keep it warm in a night as cold as tonight?
She had seen this countless times but it always broke her heart to see such a thing right before her.
A gentle yet icy breeze flew by, the lady's open hair swayed along like a gentle wave before settling back down.
The woman shivered despite the long and thick coat. It seemed as though the wind was telling her to get the baby inside in a much warmer embrace.
It appeared to have worked as she blinked breaking out of her thoughts and back into reality. She turned around and scurried back up the stairs—now having forgotten about her briefcase and dear umbrella—
Creak
Slam
A loud creak followed by an equally loud slam of the door was created as the woman rushed in. The sound echoed through the cream coloured halls which alerted the caretakers.
"LANA!"
"EVERYONE! QUICK!"
Upon hearing the urgency in the head lady's call, the caretakers and staff reached the front door.
"What is the matter, Madam Sumikage?!" One asked with concern as she neared Sumikage.
Sumikage gently handed the basket to the staff member and everyone gathered around to see what the cause of the uproar was. What they saw was a young child fast asleep in the comfort of the basket.
Another child?
"Where did you find her, head mistress?" One voiced her thought. The others followed in with their own inquires short after.
The head Sumikage raised a hand, silencing the questions.
"It seems the poor child was left out in the cold hoping for the orphanage to take her in." Was Sumikage's response.
Sumikage then asked a question to the staff, "I want to hear your opinions, though I don't want to leave the child in darkness nor do I think we can add another mouth to our budget, I still cannot bring myself to leave the baby... So please, let me hear your thoughts.."
Some didn't think it would be a wise idea to keep the child but most insisted to not let the child go either. It was undecided as to what the result would be but Sumikage made up her mind to keep the child.
So what, if it meant another mouth to feed, another body to take care of? If it meant that Sumikage could give hope to another life, she will, by all cost. That's just the kinda person she is. Always putting others first even if they're strangers..

Imagine if after all that they decided to let the baby go.(. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)
