I was in the middle of dancing and twirling Poppy around when some people started cheering behind me. I turn and see Summer on top of someone's shoulders pumping her hands in the air. "She's bound to fall. Just watch."
"And I'll laugh." Poppy says and she leads me to get a glass of water under the deck where there's a wall of Boardriders achievements pinned up. In the middle of the awards and newspapers tacked, there's Margot Torres in her own picture framed. "I can't believe Summer is Margot Torres's daughter. You know she's the only person ever from Shorehaven to make it on the state team!"
"Everyone knows that, Poppy." I flick her forehead.
"And Summer says she hates surfing. It's totally bogus." She sips a glass of coke and checks her phone reflection. "At least your flick didn't cause some bruise. I can kick you out as daughter of the surf club's founder."
"But you won't. You need me." I smile.
"Don't get last place next comp and we'll talk." She smiles back.
"Hey! Don't talk about that. It was all the judge's fault." I joke.
"You sound like Marlon when you say that." Poppy was right. Marlon always blames everyone else besides him. We all love him, but he gets too full of himself sometimes. Probably why Ari refuses to even look his way. They used to be best friends. I sit on the table and drink my water.
Summer suddenly walks up. "Hey, guys! So what did your brother say?"
"Prawnie can get you if you're ready by 3 p.m. tomorrow." Poppy says. Summer looks at the framed picture of her mom and rolls her eyes.
"Can't wait to go back home and deal with that."
"Who's going back home?" Ari pops out of thin air.
It seems he's been watching Summer from the sidelines to make sure she doesn't crack her skull open. She's been doing awesome skating tricks on the ramp all night, though. She's just way too reckless.
"Me." Summer smirks and looks like she's been planning to tell him all night.
"To where? No, no, no. My folks will kill me if they knew I knew." Ari says and all three of us roll our eyes.
"To New York, dummy." Summer hits his chest and walks off before turning to walk backwards and beckoning with both her hands to us to join her.
"Lighten up, Ari. Your mom already let you surf. You're past the hardest part. Let's dance!" I exclaim and ruffle his hair and jump off my position on the table. He follows my lead and I grab his hand to wiggle him into the middle of the crowd. My usual self wouldn't try to hit on Ari so openly but the cool, summer air mixed with cheesy dance music changed my mood so easily.
Ari and I shuffled along on the rocky sand with the rest of the group as people around squirmed us closer to face each other. "Hey." I smile and wrap my arms around his neck. It forces him to lean in closer to match my height.
