Some of the crew have gathered in the cafeteria to hear Uhura singing. Kirk and Spock were in the middle of a chess game but stopped to listen. Another crewman just so happened to have his flute handy and accompanied her. Spock seemed to become engrossed. Kirk was eyeing him intently. Anyone could see he was trying to be subtle, but failing. Finally his curiosity peaked and he said, 'Tell me Mr Spock, how can you be a connessuier of the arts without feeling the emotion of it?'
It took Spock a moment to come and out of his reverie.
'I mean, you do enjoy music don't you Spock?'
'Yes Captain, but experiencing pleasure in response to something harmonious is not an emotional reaction but a rather logical response to the truth in order.'
'I see... So you find pleasure in the representation of truth?'
'Precisely Captain'
'But you don't feel something when you listen to this uplifting song? The notes, arranged in such a way to tug at the heart strings?'
'Captain, the idea of the heart as a separate feeling entity to that of the physical organ, is a purely human invention. -which is hardly appropriate for appreciating music.'
'If you say so Mr Spock'
Spock nods.
'So when you play your lyre, you have no stirring feeling inside, no good feelings at all?'
'I did not say that Captain, I feel great satisfaction in achieving a difficult task, with skill and efficiency.'
Kirk sighs. 'Music is more than a task!' He said, a little too loudly and others looked over at them. 'Surely?...' he trailed off, a little embarrassed.
Spock leaned in slightly, 'Jim, I am aware you are trying to manipulate an expression of emotionalism from me.' He proceeds to move his chess piece, 'But you won't win.' And he tilts his head, smirking at Kirk. To his irritation, of course. 'You got me Spock.' He said, resigned.
