Your summers have always been the same. Way before you could remember, you would be shipped off to California to spend time with extended family. So why would this year be any different?

California's Charm had worn out after your teen years of rebellion. Though you can't help but reminisce on the carefree summer crushes and slumber parties. Now you have more important things to focus on, just closing out your 7th year of college for psychology and well into your 4th year of unpaid internships and busing coffee shop tables. You had even considered skipping out on Cali this year but your parents were ever so insistent. Your mom had even gone behind your back to get 2 months off from your internship and she could be very convincing.

So here you were in an Uber, staring off into the seemingly endless waves of Miramar. Passing by both old and new scenery, as you count down the streets till you arrive. You saw the name of a passing bar that read "The Hard Deck", which was the name of the bar your cousin frequented while he was in town. He had mentioned it over text while ranting about his squadron and their most recent stunts. Though for as much as he whined, it seemed like he really cared about these people.

Lost in thought you almost miss the Uber turn up a street and come to a stop. You immediately get out of the car and grab your suitcases in a hurry. You thank the driver and waddle to the front door with your luggage. Just as you were about to knock, the door opened. Your Aunt stood there in the doorway stunted before

"N/N! Sweetheart, it's so good to see you! we didn't even know if you would be coming this summer. Our little doctor-to-be!" She all but shouted, squeezing your cheeks and then hugging you tightly. Your Aunt was basically your other mother, without the button eyes and evil plans. She had encouraged you to reach for your dreams, helped you through preteen heartbreak and so much more.

"Oh Aunty, you've done so much for me, It's the least I could do" at last reciprocating in the hug. The warm embrace was as comforting as you remembered it to be. When she finally pulled away she patted your back and said

"Alrighty Sweetheart, let's get these bags to your room."

It had been about 2 hours since you arrived and you were already exhausted. You had said hello to your Uncle and grandparents, emptied all your suitcases, and taken a shower. So you laid there on your twin mattress, staring at the ceiling. You hoped sleep would take you. But the constant questions and heavy stepping through the halls, courtesy of your Aunt, wasn't exactly lulling you to sleep. You had finally caught some shut-eye when...

Knock knock knock

You groaned, goddammit. Suddenly coffee runs and awkward meetings sounded like a stunning way to spend your summer. , " Aunty I'm really tired! Could it wait like 30 minutes?" you shout at the door and turn over under the covers. Then a very familiar voice answered.

, "Really? Too tired to spend time with your favorite cousin?" You practically jumped out of the bed and threw open the door. Instant wrapping your arms around him and he laughed, " I missed you too N/N" you looked up seeing your cousin for the first time in years. It seemed that whenever you came down he was being deployed somewhere else.
