Marching away from my thoughts

Marching band had started, you would think the longer you do color guard, the less likley you are to bonk yourself in the head. That is not true. Luckily today I was going strong. The rest of the geeks who didn't play instruments were twirling and tossing the flags, practicing getting the drop flat toss in synch. I mindlessly joined them, going through the motions, managing to keep my thumbs from over lapping and making  my entire grip get messed up some how. Robin hadn't shown up yet, a shock considering Marching band was one of the few things she cared about in this school.

"CATCH IT THE RIGHT WAY PLEASE." the instructor ordered, eyeing girls who would catch the flags as if it were a giant egg they really didn't want to hit the ground. "One. Two. toss." we all threw our flags up, watching rge green and gold flags paint a path through the sky. "grab and up!" "What are you looking for Maggie? your hand eye cordination? cause thats long gone!" She blew her whistle and I could feel my cheeks grow a bright red. one two toss... bonk. the flag landed on my head, and determined not to seem bothered I ignored thr throbbing and picked it back up. I heard a car door shut and quickly glanced up, Steve had dropped Robin off finally, and She was rushing to the band room inside, gripping her mellophone for dear life. I grimaced, worried how well this would go over for her with the cranky middle aged man that all band geeks worshipped. "Enough! your making my eye's blead! Move on to the windmill toss!"

Practice was over, always a bittersweat feeling that I got over quickly. I grabbed my skate board from were I tossed it against a random tree, also picking up my bookbag and the walkman Steve got me for my birthday back in 84. I tresured the thing, a friendly reminder that no matter what shit goes down I'll always have steve. The Band room was emptying so it was like swimming upstream, I couldn't help the little bit of hope that maybe Robin was still lin the room.

I opened the doors that were no longer being occupied by the rush of hungrey teens and made my way into the instrument closet to grab the black box of noise that my parents hated. I remembered the forced smiles when I told them I was allowed to take the schools baratone home to practice. By some miracle Robin had been in there taking her trumpet out of one of the slots.

"I'm glad to see your alive." Robin glanced down to were I was kneeling on the floor, relizing I was the other person in the long narrow closet with her.

"I could say the same Maggie, that looked like a pretty painful bonk on your head." I shrugged, and pressed my lips together. Robin headed out, me close enough behind I was almost on her heals unintentionally. once we had entired the spaciouse band room then we put a healthier distance between us and both walked out. I was about to drop my skate board and head down the street when Robin grabbed my hand and dragged me into the parking lot. "If Steve knew I cought you on our way out and didn't drag you into his car with me I don't think I would ever be forgiven. Come, your big bro's going to drive us home."

Steve was waiting in the parking lot with his sunglasses on and drumming his fingers along to what ever song was playing on the radio.

"Maggie! how was your day?" Steve visably brightened and I smiled back.

"Great! I aced my chem test, no substitutes were available for gym, so we got a study hall, and Eddie Munson managed to turn a conversation that was about polotics into a discussion on fantasy and it was best topic change that could happen."

"Eddie "the freak" Munson?" I nodded, and hopped into the car.

"yeah, he's super cool. like imagine being so epic and weird that that's literally your nickname." Steve rolled his eye's and looked at Robin for help. She was just beeming at Steve, glad that another one of his kids had taken a liking to the man.

"Well, maybe you and Henderson could start a fan club, and as much as I'm ok with diffrent unless it's Munson, remember that this isn't the town to be overly weird in. I mean were in Hawkins indiana everyone is very straight forward."

"Maybe that's what makes it the town were being overly weird is a good thing. we need a little less cageyness in this place." Robin seemed impressed and I bit back a grinn, glad that I had impressed her.

"yeah ok. but never get in the car with Munsun. I'm your designated driver and no one's taking that title."
