VOL THREE. CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

❝︎ the art of
eye contact. ❞︎

They all gathered around Eddie as he began to explain what had gone down. Jack stood beside Lucas, his arms twisted against his chest, while Steve stood on the other end, next to Robin, his arms resting on his chest as well. Dustin was pacing around the wooded area, staring at his compass, and cursing to himself.

"That surge of energy was Vecna attacking Patrick," Nancy said, looking down at the watch Eddie had handed her moments ago.

Robin sighed. "Well, we're one step closer. We know how Vecna attacks."

"And where he attacks from," Lucas added.

Max shrugged. "So now we just need to sneak into his lair in the Upside Down and drive a stake through his heart."

"If he even has a heart," Jack scoffed.

"A stake?" Steve asked. "Is he like a vamp? Is he a vampire?"

Max rolled her eyes, "It was a metaphor,"

"A bullet should work on him, right?" Eddie said.

"I say we chop his head off," Lucas suggested.

Jack groaned, looking to his feet, and digging his shoe into the mud. He wanted to go home. His home was Chicago. He'd grown up in Hawkins. He learned how to ride his bike on these very streets. But, it wasn't home to him, it was just where he'd come of age. Chicago was where Jack flourished, and he missed the feeling of flying so high, that no one could cut his wings.

In Hawkins, his wings had been cut and buried.

"Hey, uh, Henderson's not, uh, cursed is he?" Eddie asked, tilting his head.

"Cursed?" Steve said. "No, no. He's fine."

"Mental?" Jack snorted, turning his head to look at the teenager. "Absolutely."

Just at that moment, Dustin's hands shot in the air. "BOOM!"

He inched closer to Steve, pointing his finger in the man's face. "Bada... bada... boom. I was right. Skull Rock was north."

"Seriously?" Steve raised an eyebrow. "You're serious?"

This statement caused Steve to blow up. Completely blow up. He yelled at Dustin while the younger boy stood in front of him imperiously, holding the compass high.

"This worked correctly when we left the Wheelers," Dustin said. "It was correct when we got in the car on Curly. But, it started to slip the further east we went. Now it's way off. When I was leading us here, I wasn't wrong, the compass was."

"So you're using faulty equipment. You're still wrong." Steve threw his hands.

Dustin pointed at Steve. "Except it isn't faulty. Lucas, do you remember what can affect a compass?"

"An electromagnetic field," Lucas replied.

"Yes," Dustin smiled.
