The world we live in is a vast and mysterious place, I didn't understand just how much until i became one of its protectors, but I'm getting ahead of myself here, my name is Marney Jackson and five years ago I had the adventure of a lifetime, fell in love, and became Echo, the seventh member of the Guardians, Earth's protectors. Let me start from the beginning. Twenty-four years ago, the world was plagued by a viral pandemic, any children born during that time had a fifty-fifty chance of developing a gene that would give them the ability to develop amazing powers. These select few would be given two choices, either keep their powers and help society or take a serum that would cancel out their powers allowing them to live normal lives.

Those who chose to keep their powers went on to jobs like construction, medical care, firefighting, and police work, but a small percentage became criminals and villains. Thus, bringing in the need for superheroes like the Guardians, eight of the most elite superhumans, and I was one of them.

Leaping the pack was Dragon, with the ability to manipulate the air around him. His second and third in command, the twins, Voda and Sila. Voda could control water and even freeze it, while her silent sister could bend a car in half with her superhuman strength. Cleric, the fourth in line and the group's healer, could connect with the nature around him and use it to heal the most stubborn of injuries. Then you have my best friend and her boyfriend, Spark and Gearhead, but we all call him Gears in the field. Spark could create fire and channel lightning through her twin pistols. Gears had a way with machinery that was almost musical, the way he could take something old and make something amazing from it was how he became our armorer. Lastly, was me and Pixie, we joined the team within two weeks of each other. Pixie could bend light at will and had a pretty impressive pair of dragonfly wings on his back.

My powers started to develop when I was about seventeen. Back then I didn't know what to do, my head was filled with thoughts that weren't my own, so loud that I developed headaches. I could throw objects across my room without touching them. I felt like Matilda, you know the scene when she makes a bowl of cereal without touching the box then proceeds to feed herself without lifting the spoon. Only my parents loved me and my brother, David, equally.

I decided to not tell anyone about my powers with the fear of judgment. They did come in handy in school, because I could read minds, I knew answers to tests, not to mention everyone's secrets. The latter was both a blessing and a curse. They turned my world upside down. My best friend, Lara, developed her powers a year after mine and it wasn't until we turned nineteen that we showed each other. By that point she was already a member of the team. As soon as I lifted her coffee in front of her she was amazed but it still took a little convincing, so I told her that I knew she was dating Gearhead, and she believed me right then.

She offered me a chance to be on the team, and I accepted. With that information, she took me to the Bunker. The Bunker was like the underground hideouts you read about in comics, it was fully equipped with the essentials, training rooms, living quarters including a kitchen, a hangout space, garage, Cleric's med bay, and Gears workshop. Lara was giving me the tour when the team got back from a mission.

"Hey guys," she yelled over at them. "Come meet Marney, she is thinking about joining the team."
