Okay, setting the scene, Ace sneaks out from his dorm, ends up finding a quiet place near the woods and sits near a tree and starts bawling his eyes out because shit is getting to him, he can't relax and he hasn't been in a vulnerable state for way too long and his trust issues are far too big and so are his insecurities to let anyone in.
Coincidentally at the same time Malleus is also out on a stroll and hears Ace crying and goes to comfort him because dammit he's trying to build friendly relations with people.
He approaches the crying teenager to try and comfort him but it only makes Ace cry harder but the thing is he's clutching onto Malleus so the poor guy is confused by the mixed signals!
Eventually Ace calms down and gives Malleus some context on his breakdown because might as well, it's not like anyone else is going to find out and he expects the other to leave him alone after this.
Oh ho ho ho he does not.
Malleus then spends weeks, months comforting Ace till it becomes damn well courting and Ace can't really complain. Like, he's getting free shit from it and it causes other students to back off so why not
(He also refuses to acknowledge the fact that he feels loved he feels safe and he feels protected near Malleus. He refuses to outwardly show people that Malleus's hold is so so protective and so loving that it's the safest he's felt ever since coming here)
Meanwhile all the other first years are wondering what the actual fuck is going on and how the fuck did this happen whilst also being slightly jealous that Ace doesn't feel that comfortable with them
