Original Characters

Dear Writers,

I love OC's(Original Characters).

I have made many OC's across many different fandoms during my time on this Earth.

I love how unique and different they are from anything else created.

I also hate OC's for the same reason.

Because OC's are usually shown as self-inserts, Mary-Sues, and they are generally bland and one-sided.

Especially OC's that you create to ship with a character.

At this point, OC's are just a couple of traits that you like from a character/multiple characters in a show or movie in order to ship them with your favorite character from said show/movie, rather than finding a character that's already in the show/movie and shipping them with your favorite character.

In a lot of fanfics, the OC usually never changes.

They stay the same, no matter how much trouble they put themselves or others in because of it.

There's no development, no trying to make me like the OC, no trying to show me how good of a couple your OC and the favorite character are.

It's just pushed together and we, as the readers, are supposed to accept it and understand it, even if we never get told a backstory.

And then canon characters will act out or change completely in front of OC throughout the whole story.

It just doesn't make sense.

Unless your OC plays a key role in the fanfic or is the MC, DO NOT GIVE THEM THE SPOTLIGHT.

But the thing readers hate the most?

When the OC is overpowered to the point where they can one-shot hard enemies.

I once read a fanfic on AO3 about BNHA where the OC had 28 quirks, and could solo Deku with the tip of their toe.

Some writers think that sort of stuff is exciting, but we as readers find it boring and sometimes annoying after a few chapters.

If you guys are trying to make a self insert, do it. Make a self-insert. But do not label it as OC X (Favorite Character), because you are not the OC.

Make sure to make your OC's dynamic and not just a carbon copy of you or a character in the show/movie.

Happy Reading!

XOXO, womaninthequeue
