It was him, the guy from this morning.
Valerie shot me a look but smiled at Caleb.
"What do you mean?" She asked him politely.
"I saw him and the group of douches this morning on my way to school," I explain and pull out my phone. I scroll through Twitter and Instagram while Caleb explains in more detail of how we met. He truly was annoying. I noticed girls around us whispering and staring at him. I roll my eyes and go back to my phone.
"Did you hear that Alex?" I looked up at Valerie. I raised my eyebrows implying 'no but what?'
"Caleb is starting an art program."
"Wow on your first day? Let's see how that works out for you," I fake smile at him.
"C'mon Alex you're great at art," Blake butts in. I glare at him.
"Doesn't mean that I want to join a stupid art program."
"I think I'm going to join," Valerie glares back at me. I get up and grab my backpack.
"Bye." I leave and walk towards my locker. When I get to my locker there are two freshmen standing by it. I glare at them and the two girls scurry off. I laugh to myself as I open my locker and check my timetable. Calculus. The only class I was failing.
"Calculus huh?" A boys voice says from behind me. I turn to look despite already knowing who it was.
"Caleb, what do you want?" I ask "And how did you find my locker?"
"Valerie said we had classes together. I may have followed you."
"You think because we have classes together that we are going to be friends?"
"Wow I see the bitch coming through." Normally at comments like that I just laugh and agree but this time it hurt? I don't know why but it did. I just nod and turn back to my locker. I guess he could see that it effected me because he taps me on the shoulder.
"I'm sorry. Shit. I shouldn't have said that," Caleb stresses.
"You were right. The bitch is back. Goodbye," I turn back to my locker and hear him leave. Why did that effect so much? Why does he have such an influence on me? I pick up my notebooks and shut my locker. In calculus, I saw Caleb sitting in the back row. I look around for a seat and watch people squirm when my eyes go over them. The only available seat happens to be the one in front of Caleb. I take a seat and I see the awkward stress in his eyes. The class starts and I open my notebook. Instead of paying attention I doodle in my book. I find myself drawing eyes. His eyes. Before I know it class is over and I managed to get through without getting asked anything from my teacher. I pick up my things but keep the notebook open. I stand up notebook on one arm and pen in my other hand. I touch up the eyes and start to walk out. Caleb catches up to me and walks next to me.
"Look Alex. I didn't mean to say that I just, I don't know what I was thinking. I know you don't want to be but I think it would be cool if we were friends," He says flustered.
"I said it was fine. In fact I take it as a compliment," I scan up and down at his flustered self, "I see you're letting your cool guy act down."
"That's what a pretty girl like you does to guys like me," Caleb replies and before I have a chance to reply. Kat, Kate and Kaitlin step in front of us. They are the schools typical cheerleader popular group. Kat is the principals daughter and Kate was her best friend since elementary school. Kaitlin is their friend that is wannabe popular.
"Hi I'm Kat. You must be the new guy, Caleb right?"
"Uh yeah," Caleb says confused.
"Oh and it's bitch face," Kate points to me. Caleb stands a little closer and straighter next to me. If he thinks I can't stand up for myself than he's wrong.
"Caleb, why don't you come hang with us instead of little miss loser here?" Kaitlin giggles.
"Look Kit Kats why don't you leave and go to your next class. Caleb doesn't want to hang out with skanks," I reply. It wasn't my best comeback but it will do for now.
"How would you know what Caleb wants?" Kate questions, pushing me.
"I would know because I've know him longer than you've known each other," I lie pointing to Kat and Kate, "In fact we're so close he's seen me naked." I continue with the lie praying Caleb would go along with it.
"You poor unfortunate soul. We have to go," Kat says and struts away with the other trailing behind her.
"Seen you naked?" Caleb looks at me "I don't recall that. Maybe you should refresh my memory." He winks at me and I sigh.
"Get over yourself. Just be grateful I saved you from them."
"Who are they?"
"The schools very own mean girls. Kat's the leader, her dads the principal. Kate is Kats best friend known each other since elementary. Kaitlin is the new addition."
"Oh right," He looks down at my open notebook, "Wow those eyes they're amazing."
"It's nothing really, just a doodle I did in class."
"Alex they really are good. You should consider joining my future art program," Caleb looks at me.
"Why so I can learn what I already know?" I walk faster. So does he.
"Well maybe you could help me teach?"
"Teach? You want me to teach a bunch of high school students that are afraid of me, art?"
"Well it wouldn't just be high school students," He trails off.
"It's still a no. Just leave it alone and me," I say and leave him standing there in the hallway. I watch as his shoulders slump. For the first time I feel something. Something I haven't felt in a while. Guilt.
