I stand there shocked as they wheel Caleb past me. What happened? Was he ok?
"W-w-what happened?" I stutter to Valerie. I watch as they load Caleb into the ambulance.
"He fell down the stairs, he said he was going to see you," Valerie says quietly, "they say he's broken both his legs."
"Shit, what are we going to do?" I ask her nervously. I wanted to help, to be there with him and to comfort him. There were two issues with that, first we still weren't that close and two I was kidding if I thought I could just leave school and be allowed in the ambulance with them.
"I talked to one of the paramedics and they told me that they were going to x-ray him and if he's legs are broken," Valerie pauses, "they will try and do the surgery asap. She said that if they do the surgery it will be done by the time we finish school, go home and go there."
"Damn that's quick," Blake adds as Valerie nods. The rest of the day goes very slowly and I feel myself drifting off, thinking of how much pain Caleb must be in. When the last bell rings, I pretty much run to my locker. I shove a whole bunch of books in my bag, not checking whether I needed them or not. I move in between people through the halls, occasionally pushing people or telling them to walk quicker. I reach the car park and wait at Valerie's car. Her and Blake walk towards the car hand in hand. I yell at them to unlock the car and Valerie does so, barely focusing. I quickly climb into the passenger seat and wait for the slowest couple in the world to reach the car. They quickly pile into the car and we drive to the hospital. I texted Valerie's mum to ask if she knew what room Caleb was in. She didn't but quickly found out through Caleb's parents.
"Level 3 room 31," I tell Blake and Valerie. We make our way quickly to Caleb's room. There lies Caleb with his family lying around him. I nervously walk in. Valerie introduces Blake and I to them. I give a slight wave. Caleb has his leg in a cast on the bed. They are keeping him a couple days to ensure he doesn't have and brain injuries. Caleb's family leave and go to get an early dinner. I watch as his little sister Bella holds her mums hand, asking her when Caleb will be out of hospital. Sometimes I feel sorry for little kids, like her. They don't understand these things. I walk up to Caleb and place my hand over his. Valerie does the same but places her hand on his shoulder. Blake awkwardly stands at the bottom of the bed. Just like a fairytale Caleb wakes up at the touch of my hand. He turns his head slowly and is surprised when he sees me.
"Alex!" He whispers excitedly.
"Hey Caleb," I whisper back "How's it going?"
"Good now that you're here," He smirks.
"That's such a fuckboy thing to say," I reply going back to my bitchy self.
"I am NOT a fuckboy." He argued.
"Are you sure about that?" I snapped back.
"Yes," Caleb pouted. He looked so cute pouting.
"Okay fine," I agreed with him.
"How's the legs mate?" Blake asks.
"Since when did you become Australian?" Caleb laughed, "They're sore but I just want to go home."
"Do you have to be in a wheelchair?" I ask.
"Yeah, I guess you'll be pushing me around," Caleb winks. I roll my eyes but smile. As tiring as it will be pushing him around, it will be good to spend time with Caleb.
We hang around talking about school and life and all that shit, until Caleb's family gets back. Valerie drops me at home before Blake and her go back to his place. I lay down on my bed and pull out my phone. I text Caleb and he quickly replies.
Me: Hey feeling any better?
Me: Even though we only just left.
Caleb: Yeah I'm just having disgusting hospital food.
Me: Hahaha sucked in!!
Me: Actually I'm having leftovers, so it's not much better.
Caleb: Trust me, I'd much rather be having leftovers than the soup they've given me.
Caleb: Sorry that our plans got cancelled.
Me: Dude, you broke your leg you do not need to be apologising.
With that Caleb and I talked late in to the night and I had more fun than expected.Hey guys!
