Angelina thought this was a great idea.
Go over the mountains, find her papá, bring him back to the Casita, and make the family whole again. Her mami wouldn't have to worry, Tia Pepa would stop the rain, Dolores would be spared from the booming thunder, Javier wouldn't be anxious, and everyone else in the house would see brighter days.
And she can shove her success into Ignacio's face. That'll teach him.
It was a brilliant idea.
Except Angelina was starting to regret her choices.
Why did the sky decide to rain now when she was flying over?!
"Tia Pepa! Please calm down!" Angelina cried out to the sky in a fruitless effort. She knew no one could hear her-well, except maybe Dolores, but she was out of commission because of the thunder. Her Tia Pepa's gift and Dolores' exceptional hearing weren't exactly the most compatible, especially when it rained so much and thundered every minute-but she had to scream out her frustrations anyway.
This was a stupid idea.
Maybe I should just go down and wait for the rain to pass, she thought to herself. The wind picked up in speed and started to whip her hair around in a frenzy. Angelina gave herself a pat on the back for remembering to tie her skirt together. If she didn't, then the fabric might've been a challenge for her to move and fly around in. Lightning flashed right beside her, but she knew how to avoid them with ease. But it didn't deter the fear that managed to strike her heart at every strike that rolled right beside her. Who knows what would happen if she got hit by a zap of her Tia Pepa's lightning?
Maybe she should just land right now...
No. She wasn't going to give up so easily. Not when stupid Ignacio was doubting her ideas. Honestly! He was always causing trouble for mami, and then suddenly, he's not going to help her try to find their father? The least he could do was support her! He should've used his trouble maker tendencies to at least help their mother out!
Stupid, stupid Ignacio.
Angelina put a hand to her face as she felt the stabbing cold hit her barren skin as she flew further up. Her nose felt as if it was ice, her fingers like freezing metal that threatened her to fall down. Angelina never knew that flying so high up would make it so hard for her to breathe-she wasn't exhausted, not at all. But why? She never felt tired from flying for hours in her room, but why now did she feel like the air was thinning the further she went?
Just a little further, she thought to herself as she saw the peak of the mountain come into view. Just a little bit more and she can finally get out of the cold.
The rain started to pour, the wind lashing out on her face, and her eyes felt dry amidst the cold later afternoon air.
Just a little more.
The heavy raindrop pelted her skin painfully. Flying faster only made it worse for her. Just a little bit more. Just a little bit more through the mist and the rain and she can finally be on the peak of those mountains. She can finally prove to Ignacio that her plan wasn't stupid. She can prove to Javier that the monsters aren't that bad. Maybe there aren't even any monsters at all! She'll find their papá, bring him home, and they will be one big happy family again. Mami will have to thank her-thank Angelina for looking for Bruno, thank her for being the best daughter, thank her for being brave-
Angelina began to panic when lightning suddenly flashed beside her and almost threw her off course.
She managed to regain her bearings for a moment, but her fright had led her to a series of tumbles in the air that had left her breathless. Her toes went cold, and so did her hands. The rain wasn't helping her eyes, moreso that the drops have managed to blind her momentarily. She felt a sickening nausea come up as she spun in the air to regain control, but she swallowed the lump that formed on her throat and tried to take control of herself as her momentum led her down near the cliffside.
