When we got back in the car Max looked at me. "Why did you do that?" Max asked.
"That was intense. We needed to trade him and we did it."
Max held out the folder. "Was losing something important worth it?"
"To get the name for the snake? Yes." I reach for the folder but Max held the folder away from me.
Then he drove us to a garage parking lot and he opened it. "Ebony Slithers aka Snake. He stole from the loan sharks and now his pride and joy, his car, is being held in an unclosed place where the sharks are holding it until the money is returned."
"So he has a list of name that has a big debt to the sharks and steals from the list."
"So he's trying to get back his car and he's killing to get it."
"When that didn't work out well, his partner stole a big chunk of the money and ran while Ebony steals from stores to make up for it."
"Makes sence."
"Are you hungry?" Max asked.
"Sure, let's get a quick bite to eat and then get to Spike. He needs to know this."
"What do you have plan? You're off the case."
"I'm a PI. They asked for my help, they can't stop me now."
Then we stopped at a place to get a quick bite to eat and then we rushed all the way to the precinct in Adventura.
I knocked on Spike's door. "Come in." He said. Then I walked in. "What are you doing here?"
"Spike, we got the name."
"I thought I told you to get off this case."
"You're kidding me right? I just found a receipt, I went to a source, not telling who, and I got the name." I handed Spike the the file.
He took it and slammed it on the desk. "Catherine Kaynine, I order you to go back to New York City."
"No." I said.
"Go back to New York City or I will personally escort you home."
I open my mouth but nothing came out.
"I know you're a witness to the voice and I will give you a call but from now on this is my case. You are off the case. We got what we needed, thank you for your help but go back to New York City. I will be letting your uncle and your dad know that you are on your way."
A cop came and escorted me out. "This is not fair, we are so close and I have everything." I snatched the folder. He is not having this.
"You heard the chief, you heard of the alpha." The cop whispered.
"You guys called me in for help and this is what I get? I'm letting my Uncle and Dad know. I'm 22 years old and you're treating me like this. This is Shifterist."
"And we got your help, you give us a start and that was it. Thank you for your help please go back to New York." I was escorted out of the precinct.
I went back to Max, who is waiting in his car. I didn't know what to say. "Cat, you okay?"
"Can we go back to your apartment please."
"Sure." We drove in silence. When Max parked, he turned off the car and looked at me. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"Did you and Spike fight again?"
"What else is new." I said.
We got into Max's place and I was greeted by Alex and I sat on the couch as Alex snuggled up to me.
Max was standing in the door frame between the kitchen and the living room, watching me. "Cat, what is wrong? You're actually quiet, it's scaring me." I got up, walked up to Max and hugged him.
I don't know how to tell him, my heart is just breaking right now, "Can I sleep with you tonight?" I asked.
He picked me up cradled me in his arms and then we went to his room, leaving the world behind. Once Max shut the door, he took me in his arms and we explore each other.
I woke up the next to Max in his bed, feeling blissed but my heart breaking once again. It was hurting. I have found my mate but I was ordered to go back to New York City. I don't have the heart to tell Max. I checked my phone, it's 5 in the morning. I quickly and quietly got up from the bed covering myself in the sheet, got dress, I turned around and saw Max sleeping on his stomach. I don't want to wake him up and disturb his dreams I quietly went to the guest room and packed my things.
Alex walked up to me. "I know this going to be the last time I see you. Be a good boy and watch out for Max, okay bud?" He gave a little whimper so I fed him, and gave him some water. While he was busy I took my bags and left the apartment. I packed up my car and pulled out of the garage and headed straight for New York City with a broken heart.
