When Ava and Sam got to the new foster home, they started unloading Ava's things. A girl, about the same age as Ava was, came running up to the car. She introduced herself as Adalyn. She offered o help carry Ava's stuff inside, but she refused to let her. Ava didn't know if she was going to take any of her items. Adalyn instead showed Ava to their room. It was quite small, but there was enough room to be able to get comfortable in it, and Ava didn't complain. So far this place was better than Mrs. Payne's house.
Ava went back outside to say goodbye to Sam. Sam was just about to leave when she stopped her.
"I just wanted to thank you for not telling the police that I had powers," Ava said thankfully.
"It's no problem. Just remember to keep it a secret here. You don't want to get sent to another home," Sam said quietly, trying not to be heard by anyone else.
"What about Mrs. Payne," Ava whispered, "Won't she know I have powers. She will call the police and send me to a lab or something."
"I will take care of that. Your mother gave me a special kind of dust that makes peple forget what happened in the past 24-36 hours. It just depends on how much you use," Sam said with a slight smile.
"Wait I didn't know you knew my mom," Ava sounded surprised.
"Your mom and I went to college together and stayed in the same dorm. Phoebe was the only person I knew that could do the same type of things that i could do," Sam said like she was remembering something
"What do you mean by doing the same type of thing you could?" Ava blurted out Instantly.
"Well," Sam said "Your mom had the power to freeze time and move objects with her mind, you have the power of the elements, and I can form a shield around myself and can control and start fires."
"How come you can use fire like me?" Ava questioned.
"You have the power of elements and it includes fire. Me on the other hand, can cause fires because my father was a demon," Sam said this with hatred in her voice. "My mom was a witch who fell for the tricks of a demon. The demon ,she fell in love with, stabbed her in the back, literally. He gained the power of invisibility because when a demon kills a witch, they get their powers."
A man started calling out Ava's name. It was Mr. Smith. He is married to a beautiful woman with brown wavy hair and baby blue eyes. Mr. Smith also has brown hair, but has brown eyes and moustache.
"Ava," Mr. Smith called out again, "It's time for dinner."
"Give me one minute to say goodbye to Sam." Ava shouted just enough for Mr. Smith to hear.
"Well I'd better get going. I have to pickup another kid. I hope you enjoy your new home." Sam told Ava.
"I think I will," Ava said cheerfully. She started to walk down the driveway as Sam drove away.
Ava washed up and then sat down at the dinner table with the rest of the family. They were eating macaroni and cheese with mashed potatoes and roasted chicken. Ava thought it was a tiny bit fancy, but the only thing Ava really got to eat was oatmeal and some berries she found on trees.
"I know that it's not much of a house, but this is really only what we need." Mrs. Smith said kindly.
"This is better than the last foster home I went to," Ava replied with a smile.
"We are going to go to the store tomorrow and we have a surprise as well. Sadly, we had to book it tomorrow instead of today, but I thought you could use a bit of rest from that long drive," Mrs. Smith said, " You must be very tired."
"I'm not too tired, but I could use a little time to settle down and unpack my things," Ava said.
"Sorry you couldn't get your own room, but we got a new mattress for both you and Adalyn. And it came with free bedsheets and pillows." Mr. Smith said.
"That sounds great. At least I get my own bed. I had to share with another girl at my old foster home. She was a kicker." Ava said chuckling slightly.
"So, Ava, do you need any new items like books or clothes while we're out shopping tomorrow?" Mrs. Smith asked.
"Well, I could use some new clothes and new books would be nice. But we don't need to buy the books we could go to the library." Ava said.
"That sounds like a plan, and if we don't finish it all by 8:30 then we can finish shopping the next day." Mrs. Smith replied.
After they finished eating and cleaning up dinner Ava went to her new room. She had a nice bed with soft sheets and blankets. She also had a dresser and a desk next to her bed. On Adalyn's side of the room there was the same things except she had some stuff that was personal like posters and one picture in a frame, but Ava didn't see the picture because Adalyn had just sat on her bed blocking the view of the picture. Ava had a frame that looked almost identical to hers with a few scratches here and there.
Ava was starting to unpack her suitcase. Adalyn offered to help and Ava accepted. While they were putting up Ava's clothes Adalyn noticed Ava had a small burnt up blanket with Ava's name written on it. Adalyn had one made out of the same material and it had the same print on it only her blanket had her own name.
"Where did you find that blanket?" Adalyn asked starting to look through her own stuff.
"I didn't find it. I always had it." Ava said wondering why she asked.
"I found it." Adalyn said walking over with a blanket of her own. "I have a blanket to it looks like the one you have."
"Are you sure that it's your blanket?" Ava asked.
"Yes! I was found in a burnt down house swaddled in this blanket." Adalyn said.
"Do you also have a picture frame that was found with you?" Ava asked.
"Yes I do," Adalyn responded then went to her desk and grabbed the same picture Ava noticed before.
