Azrael screamed as the hound closed its jaws over his upper arm and bit down hard, rending flesh. His chest thumped in fear; he had not been joking when he told August he was not a huge fan of dogs. His powers would have no effect on a military hound even if it had not been locked away by the soldiers. He tried to force the hound off of him, but him being tied up like he was, he could only get so far. Looked like today was the day he was going to be torn to pieces by a dog.
"Stop!" came a command from somewhere above him, and the dog loosened its grip.
Of course, thought Azrael bitterly. They wouldn't let him die. He was an asset they could not lose. He searched through the blood and pain until he found the soldier stooping over him.
"Sit!" the soldier ordered the hound, and the hound complied.
Azrael's heart was still beating wildly in his chest. He wanted to get away from the cursed animal.
"Did you forget so soon what would happen to the ones who do not obey us?" asked the soldier in a sickly sweet voice.
"Do your worst," Azrael snarled at him. He could feel the electric collar at his throat. He could feel the cold eyes of dozens of soldiers standing in attention. He did not forget. "Torture me. Tear me limb from limb. Kill me. I don't care anymore."
"Maybe not," the soldier squatted down next to him. He fished for something in his pockets and took out a bunch of photographs. "You may not care what happens to you, but what about them?"
Horror stole through Azrael when he recognised the people in the photos. Siward and August. His other classmates. He glared at the sneering soldier before him, and then, having nothing to say, he spat in his face.
The soldier reeled back from him, shooting to his feet in anger. He kicked viciously at one of Azrael's open wounds. Azrael grunted, but did not let up his death-stare.
Finally the man could not take it anymore. He bent down and stroked the fur of the hound. "Go ahead and teach him a lesson, Princess."
The hound was more obedient than Azrael. It leapt onto him, teeth and claws drawn. The soldier saw the fear on Azrael's face and laughed at him. "Just give a shout when you think you are ready to obey. I'll come back to save you."
Then the soldier left; and Azrael was left to his hell.
