Alex woke up with a start. Her back ached and the morning sun was shining in her face. She was no longer in the safe shelter of the library. Instead, she was lying down in the middle of a meadow with spiky tufts of grass pricking her bare neck. Alex blinked and rubbed her eyes. Little rivers snaked around in the fields and colourful flowers popped out of the ground. It was such a picturesque scene, as if it was a detailed painting plucked straight out of an art gallery. However, her trance was abruptly interrupted by a piercing scream that echoed from the sky. It grew louder and louder, until it was cut off by a heavy thud.
Out of the blue, a limp body had fallen out of the sky, landing on a grassy hill a few metres away from Alex. It was a little girl, with a frightened freckled face, short strawberry blonde hair in little pigtails and bright blue eyes. For a while, she didn't move, she just panted profusely and heaved in deep breaths. Surreptitiously, Alex approached the petrified child. She frowned, and then her face twisted into an expression of recognition. "ALICE! Why are you here?" A few butterflies nearby flew away as Alex filled the valley with her high-pitched squealing. At this, the girl shot up from her awkward posture and let out a loud wail. "I'm so scared! Are we in heaven?"
