Florina Knox.....New York City, New York 3:24PM, Barnes and Nobles.
I walk up the escalator, walking over to the corner near the windows, sitting down. I take out my Calculus text book as I wait for Brian and Zach. I scroll through my phone when I look up to see Brian and Zach walking over to me with smiles plastered on their faces.
"Whats with all the creepy smiles?" I ask
"Oh no reason. I mean you are helping us succeed and pass this class so that we can be on our way to a higher education." Zach says, dropping his bag on the floor as he sits down. Brian sits down next to him, laughing it up.
"I mean hey, a friends gotta do what a friends gotta do." I reply with a smile.
"True that." Brian replies.
"Alright so lets get started on what you guys need help with. Are you guys both in the same math class?" I ask and they nod.
"Alright, take out the homework that you guys have for tonight and i'll talk you through it. Sound good?" I ask and they both nod. They take out their work and I look through it as I then explain it to them and help them as they do the problem.
One hour later and two completed assignments, we are finally done.
"Wanna grab some coffee and chill back at your place?" Brian asks me and I nod. The three of us walk down the escalator and to Starbucks. We order our coffees with Brian wanting to pay, we head back in separate cars and back to my place.
We get there and head upstairs into my room where the sun is shining in through my window as we sit on the floor listening to Coffee by Sylvan Esso.
"When do your parents get back?" Brian asks me, sipping his coffee.
"I have no idea. I talked to my dad yesterday and he said everything is good, he just never mentioned when they were going to come back. I didn't ask. My dad just got a townhouse out in Soho and the divorce papers aren't finalized for another five days. " I say as I sip my own cup.
"Damn Knox, another five days? But at least your dad is letting your mom have the house."
"I know, another 5 days of them arguing about the days I get to come over and sleep. Zach are you sleeping over tonight?"
"You know it. God, I can't stand my parents. Every night they fight about why my dad was out so late and didn't come home when my mom asked him nicely or even when my mom comes home late and my dad does the same thing. They alternate roles. They act like each other every other day. " He says and I nod.
"You are so lucky you get to sleep over here. I haven't slept over since the 6th grade when you threw that God awful Christmas party and we exchanged gifts. It's funny that half of the people you invited, we absolutely despise now." Brian says laughing a bit afterwards.
"True, but I gotta say I am the best gift giver in the world. If there was a job for it that job would belong to me. Hey Zach, excited for that project?" I ask him, he sips his coffee nodding his head.
"Yeah man, I mean come on, almost a month in a different country looking at museums and writing it down. Thats fucking sick." He exclaims excitedly while Brian just looks confused.
"Our teacher, makes all the seniors that take her class, go on a trip to Europe and while in Europe you have to visit a museum or monument or landmark of that country and write about your experience there. Did you like it? What is it? And since Zach and I are taking that class, we get to go in a few days. Oh, um Zach, did you and your partner discuss where you guys are headed to?" I explain as I then ask Zach.
"Uh yeah, we're headed to Germany. What about you?"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. How the hell did I not know about this?" Brian asks as Zach and I laugh.
"It's a journalism class that you could have chosen last year when we went to guidance to do our schedules. Oh Harry and I chose France. I mean Paris has a lot of museums and like three monuments so we'll have like five or six places marked done."
"That's sick. I mean Germany has the Anne Frank museum and then a few memorials dedicated to the Holocaust, so that's going to be cool. But Brian, I don't really think you would want to do this assignment. Anything that requires writing your mind literally draws a blank." Zach says, as Brian face drops and his eyes widen as he looks at Zach and I laugh.
"Hey, don't be a dick dude. My mind doesn't draw a blank, it's just creative in other subjects. I'm not creative specifically in writing, but in art class, you hand me a piece of paper and a pencil, i'll draw whatever comes to mind ten times better than you." Brian says in which quickly shut Zach up. This fact about Brian is true. Since about the fifth grade he's loved to draw. He once won an award in the eighth grade for best self portrait.
"Whoa guys, guys break it up." I say in a serious man voice, as Zach and Brian just laugh at me. My face splits into a grin as I sip some more of my coffee and laugh afterwards. Brians phone rings and he takes it out of his pocket and answers it, as Zach sips coffee.
"Hello? Mom? Yeah i'm fine, just with Zach and Florina. Yeah I finished my homework. Alright, i'll see you in twelve. Love you too." Brian says and hangs up, putting his phone back in his pocket.
"Man, my mom always has some cousin over. It's like always last minute and so annoying. Like I love the woman, but she should at least give me a heads up. Alright guys, I gotta shake it, peace." Brian says as he hugs the both of us, taking his coffee with him, he gets up and walks out the room, down the stairs until I hear the front door open and shut.
"Well he's gone so what do you want to do?" I ask as I walk over to my record payer, I take out Sylvan Esso and play Down by The Kooks.
"Well do you have any chores to do that you're parents wanted you to do." Zach says.
"I do have to buy groceries." I say and he smiles.
"Perfect." He says. I grab my bag and car keys as we walk down the stairs and out the door to the car. I drive to the grocery store as Zach turns up the volume to the song Somebody by Jukebox The Ghost. He bobs his head along to it as I get off an exit and stop at the shopping center. I park my car near Target as Zach and I get out of the car. He grabs a shopping cart as I get in the cart with my legs dangling out. Zach starts to run towards the entrance to Target as I giggle furiously, my hair blowing in different directions. We enter Target as Zach strolls towards the food section.
"What do you need Knox?" He asks as I get out of the cart.
"Turkey bacon, and then we need shit loads of ice cream because you know me." I say and Zach shrugs.
"I'm sorry, who are you? I don't know you." Zach says and I shrug.
"I don't know. Are you lost?" I ask and Zach laughs. I put the Turkey bacon in the cart as I grab some milk as well. Zach and I stroll over to the freezers as we grab 4 pints of Talenti cookie caramel crunch and a few Häagen-Dazs ice -cream along with Ben & Jerrys.
"When you're parents come back they're going to think we're insane." Zach says and I laugh.
"For sure." I say. We both walk over to the candy aisle, buying some Skittles and white chocolate Kit Kats.
"Alright, well I think we're good. Lets just get some Lucky Charms and we're done here." I say as I grab a Lucky Charms cereal box. Zach and I walk over to the paying aisle as we self check-out. He puts the bags in the cart as I pay for the food. We both put the bags in the back of the car as Zach drives home this time.
We get home, the both of us end up putting the groceries away and heading upstairs. I change into my pj's as does Zach. We both close all the lights in the house before heading to bed to prepare for the day ahead
