(**Warning, a bit of blood/angst! Y'all know how I roll.**)
Dib was so excited to go exploring the forests around Gravity Falls with Dipper. This place was so full of paranormal creatures, it was amazing to Dib. Multi-Bears, gnomes, zombies, unicorns, ghosts, and so much more! It was a dream come true. After all those years of no one taking him seriously, of being alone, of being "the freak"…
Dib looked over at Dipper, who was currently jotting down notes in the journal he made, recording the weird anomalies and creatures of Gravity Falls. Mumbling his thoughts to himself.
Rays of sunlight peered through the tall pine trees, bathing Dipper in a warm, golden glow. The way the sun shone on his brown hair made it look almost bronze. That, added with Dipper's red and yellow flannel shirt, just made him look so… warm. And when Dipper started chewing on his pen, well, that was just plain adorable.
"Beautiful." Dib murmured, almost sounding awestruck. Dipper apparently heard him, because almost immediately after the word left Dib's mouth, his eyes widened, and his cheeks turned a reddish-pink.
Dipper seemed to fumble over his words a bit, in that: "I'm flattered but I don't know how to respond to a compliment so I'm panicking" kind of way.
"I uh, heh.. Thanks. You too!" Dipper stammered. Dib couldn't help but laugh a bit.
Their day started off so well. Peaceful but still interesting. Dib never thought he'd get to meet a multibear!
But cryptid chasing had its risks.
Who knew Elaphocentaurs could be so cruel?
…
They were crouching behind bushes, taking notes, Dipper illustrating the half human-half deer creature. Watching its behavior, what it ate, all that jazz.
It was all going great, until Dib messed it up. He took a photo of the deer creature, finally able to have photo evidence of a real cryptid! And he forgot to turn off the camera flash.
The white light quickly flashed with a click sound, causing the creature to snap its attention towards the boys. Shit. Why does this keep happening!? When will he learn to turn off the damn camera flash!?
The creature reared its head at them. Unlike common depictions of "deer centaurs" as people called them, with human faces and torsos attached to a deer body, this one still had a deer-like face.
The torso wasn't entirely human. It had humanoid features, like arms and opposable thumbs, but the arms were much longer, able to touch the ground while barely leaning toward, and they were more branch-like. Long, slender fingers that cracked like wood when it moved. Overall, it seemed really twitchy. Compared to how graceful it seemed before.
Maybe that was because it was pissed off.
It screeched, exposing previously unnoticed fangs, and charged at them, hooves kicking up the dirt around them as it ran. Dib and Dipper dove out of the way, just barely avoiding being trampled. Dib barely had time to chastise himself for his mistake as Dipper grabbed his arm and guided him away from their attacker.
They ran through the woods. Pines needles, bushes, branches, and thorns smack into them and leave nicks and scratches on the boys. They could still hear hooves thumping rapidly on the ground behind them.
Suddenly Dib had an idea. He turned to Dipper. "The trees! I bet it's hooves can't scale pine trees too well."
As soon as Dib said it, he saw the look of realization in Dipper's eyes. He nodded. "We better start climbing then!"
