5: Captain America

A/N

This all happened during and after the last chapter. So when Tommo was taken away from Bucky, it was only a few minutes before Steve comes to save the day. :)

Im also skipping over Steve getting the serum thing. I just think that in this book it's not that relevant to the story line. I mean he still becomes Captain America but i dont think I need to go over the whole process.

Italy, 1943

"How many of you are ready to help me sock old Ad*lf on the jaw?" Steve asked the crowd of soldiers in front of him. When he got no response he said,
"Okay. Uh... I need a volunteer."

"I already volunteered! How'd you think I got here?" The soldiers erupted into laughter.

"Bring back the girls!" another shouted. Cheers of agreement were heard after that.

Steve looked backstage, silently asking for help but none came.
" I think they only know the one song, but, um, I'll see what I can do," he spoke into the mic.

"You do that sweetheart!"

"Nice boots Tinker Bell!"

"Come on guys. We're all on the same team here." Steve said trying to de-escalate the situation.

"Hey captain!" A man shouted from the crowd as he stood up. "Sign this!" He pulled down his pants, and Steve looked away in half disgust and half sadness that they don't respect him like they do each other. All he wanted was to be like them.

Suddenly they began to hurl tomatoes at him and he had to duck away, using his shield to protect himself. When they eventually stopped, he looked at them and rushed off the stage. At this, the girls ran back on, causing a cheer from the soldiers, and began to sing again.

Steve was sat on a bench outside of his tent, drawing in a notebook that he'd taken with him. He'd always enjoyed drawing. He saw it as a relaxing pass time. Tommo never failed to tease him for it though. I wonder what Tommo and Bucky are doing right now. I should be out there with them. I'm not the same scrawny kid I was a few months ago. But I am currently no more than a dancing monkey, used to only entertain the people back home. Steve snapped out of his spiralling thoughts when he heard footsteps approaching through the rain.

"Hello Steve," the voice of Peggy Carter spoke through the sound of the heavy rainfall.
"Hi," Steve said confused.
"Hi," Peggy said again, sitting down.
"What are you doing here?"
"Officially, I'm not here at all. That was quite a performance," Peggy said.
"Yeah. I had to improvise a little bit. The crowds I'm used to are more... twelve," he answered.
"I understand you're 'America's New Hope' "
"Bond sales take a 10% bump in every state I visit."
"Is that senator Brandt I hear?"
"At least he's got me doing this. Phillips would have had me stuck in a lab."
"And these are you're only two options? A lab rat and a dancing monkey? You're meant for more than this y'know."
Steve didn't answer her for a while and they sat in silence for a few seconds before he finally spoke up again.
"For the longest time, I dreamed about coming overseas and being on the front lines, serving my country. I finally get everything I wanted and I'm in tights."

Before Peggy could say anything to console him, a medical truck speeds into the camp, honking, and people start to help rush wounded soldiers from stretchers into the medical tent. Steve looked at them sympathetically.
