"it was like a force pulling me...and it just grew stronger"

THE ONCE GREY and cloud-covered sky was now painted a deep blue, almost black hue with bursts of white stars poking through its vastness. A cool wind blew through the night, brushing against nocturnal life.

Everyone in the Swan home was asleep, at least everyone but Alaska.

Sleep was something Alaska struggled to find. As the days she spent in her childhood bedroom grew, she felt the ease of slipping into a dream state escape her.

At first, it was horrible. She longed for sleep, an escape to a reality where she and everyone around her were happy. But as she grew to it, she found a new escape—the night.

It welcomed her with the comfort of the dark. The cool breeze, beautiful stars, and far-off noises of the nocturnal animals making their way through the woods were her peace. Or at least the closest thing to it.

When she was younger, she found herself obsessed with the idea of balconies. She longed for one that would peek out into the woods behind the house. So a balcony she got.

To that day she was beyond thankful for it.

She stood on the balcony late that evening, letting night engulf her in its comforting embrace. For warmth, all she needed was her hot up of tea, lightly burning at her hands as she wrapped them around the mug.

As she approached the railing that protected her from the deep fall she placed her hand on it, lightly gripping the wearing surface.

Her eyes fluttered shut as she breathed in the night air, basking in the presence of the peace she longed for. There was something about the forest and the night that she loved.

She looked past the possible dangers and into the beauty of that combination. Something about it moved so fluidly with her, as if something pulled her in a rooted her there.
