it was an early, saturday morning when harley met michael. they were strangers, since one had just moved in about two months ago and the other had lived in the same house for their whole life.

to harley, it was early. she was forced awake by her annoying, but cute as hell, pug named butter. it was 5:27 am, which was way too early for anyone to be awake.

to michael, it was late. the "i cant sleep and haven't been able to in 3 days" kind of late. he couldn't really tell what time it was, but he did know it was technically early, since signs of the sun rising were showing in the sky.

both of them had something in common, wandering outside at 5:30 in the morning.

each of them had different reasons, though. harley had to take the dog on a walk, to the park, to the only place it would do its business. michael was only outside due to boredom and lack of sleep.

"come on, go pee," harley whined quietly whined to the fat pug sniffing around a tree. she glanced around at the few people out this early, who were mostly people over 40.

harley was the type to keep to herself, especially in public. her friends deemed her as an introvert, and her somewhat new roommate was glad that she spent so much time in her room. her roommate, delia, was 20, but looked and acted at least 27. harley never saw her much, since she spent the night at different people's houses most of the time.

a short gust of wind came, which made harley shiver a bit. it was 60 out, and even though thats not even that cold, harley thought it was. she just got cold easily.

she noticed a tall, red haired boy, which would be michael, walking on the sidewalk her way, with his hands in his pockets and his eyes on his feet. his hair reminded harley of fire, hot against his pale skin. he was probably the youngest one out at this time other than harley, and he looked quite familiar to her. he had to be a singer, or in a band, or both, y'know.

harley pat butter on head, as the dog finally squat to take a pee. she sat on the bench as she watched the dog unemotionally, getting in a stare from being woken up.

she eventually shook her head to get out of the stare, as the dog waddled up to michael, who was standing less than a foot away from harley and smiled at the small dog fondly.

"butter -" harley started to say, but stopped as michael crouched down to let the dog sniff his hand.

"do you mind if i pet her?" he asked harley, looking up at her. he was taken aback by her deep blue eyes and pink, puffy lips. she was pretty, more than pretty, really, but that was the extent of michael's brain when he was running on this little of sleep.

she shook her head, walking over to stand beside butter. "not at all. she's harmless."

michael smiled and nodded, softly petting the dog's head and scratching behind her small ears. the dog moved with his hand, enjoying the petting.

he scratched under her chin. "what's her name?"

"uh...butter."

he laughed a little, standing back up, and holding out his hand. "i'm michael."

harley took it, and let him shake her hand, noting on how warm it was. "harley."

of course, michael only introduced himself because he thought this girl was pretty. if it was an old woman or another male, he probably would have said thank you and continued walking.

her hand was cold, hands soft and gentle. hesitant, even. his was more rough from years of guitar playing.

harley would consider him attractive, even though boys with red hair and eyebrow piercings weren't her "type," and that he seemed somewhat intimidating just looking at him. that was probably only because of his eyebrow piercing and height, but he was friendly and didn't seem too bad.

she straightened out her tank top to make sure her boobs weren't hanging out, and michael couldn't help but glance down. he made sure to look away quickly so she wouldn't notice.

"i've never seen you around before," michael said, attempting to start a conversation that wasn't about her dog. he hoped that she was new in town, because he could use the old 'let me show you around town' pick up line after talking a small bit.

harley nodded, looking down at his green day shirt he had cut into a tank top. "yeah, i moved in like...two months ago. just down the street a little."

"what made you move here?" he switched from leaning on his left foot to his right foot.

"i got accepted into a college," his eyebrows raised in curiosity, "yea, uhm, at a film school...here in sydney." harley moved her hand to the back of her head, playing with a few strands of the baby hair at the bottom of her neck that had come out of her ponytail. it was a habit she tended to do in awkward situations, even though this was a normal thing to some - most - people.

michael only somewhat wondered why she didn't mention the band, or at least the rest of the guys. maybe she just didn't remember all of their names, or the actual name of the band. he also wondered what music she liked, and if she would like 5sos, since a lot of girls her age liked them.

michael then thought of how cocky that sounded.

and, he wondered how old she exactly was. he dropped out, no way he would know the typical age for a college freshman.

"wait," michael thought for a moment, "how old are you?"

harley laughed a little. "18, and i'll be 19 in august," there was a small break in conversation, "how old are you, then?"

"19, 20 in november." michael smiled a little once again, starting to walk the way he was. harley, and butter, followed, seeming it would be rude to just let him continue walking.

she looked down at butter, who was sniffing around on the ground. "have you lived here your whole life?"

michael nodded, "yeah. but i've been...traveling for the past few years a lot. haven't been around much."

"oh, aren't you in a band?" harley tried to nonchalantly ask, realizing that he was somewhat famous.

michael smiled, shrugging. "yeah."

then it snapped into place. she clicked her fingers and pointed. "thats where you're from! shit, i knew you looked familiar."

he just smiled and chuckled a little, scratching his cheek. "i was waiting for you to figure it out."

harley snapped her fingers a few times, looking down and furrowing her brows together. "toured with one direction...5 seconds of summer!! thats it."

"mhm, exactly," michael laughed, smiling at the girl's excitement. he was easily amused, especially when people, fans, noticed him in public. he liked putting a face to people who had supported him and his band throughout the years.

"i should've realized that earlier," she muttered, as her phone buzzed in her pocket.

she pulled it out and typed in her password, clicking on the text from delia. her never-home roommate asked her why she wasn't home.

michael had his hands tucked into the pockets of his hoodie as harley stopped and turned to face him. "i would stay and talk, but my roommate wants me back."

"oh, that's fine, erm," he faced her way, "yeah, i'll see you around, new sort-of neighbor."

harley smiled, and held her hand out awkwardly. "bye." michael laughed a little, shaking it tightly and waving as she walked away.
