VANCE HOPPER has only ever really been interested in pinball. Sure, he likes his friends and his music and the occasional horror film, but relationships haven't really been his thing. He liked the idea of one, but knew his angry habits and reputation would stop anyone from going for him.
Over time, Vance had gained a fear that he'd never truly be loved, and he'd always be 'too much' for any girl. How could he keep his girlfriend if the only reason he kept his friends was because they were scared of him? Question after question would plague his own mind over whether he'd ever be loved.
So he drowned them all out. Drowned them in pinball, drowned them in fights, drowned them in loud music.
CAROLINE SANDERSON was desperate for romance. Every book, every film, every song lead her to believe that the missing happiness in her heart was from a lack of a relationship. As hard as she tried, no boys ever liked her.
So Caroline thought she simply was not good enough. Maybe it was her looks. Maybe her round figure wasn't attractive to them, her tanned skin that in the wrong lighting looked green, her jet black wavy hair, her short stature, her dull brown eyes. Maybe her personality wasn't quite right. Maybe she cared too much about music and photography, her squeaky laughter put people off, her quiet manner put people off. She's left terrified of the unknown, only with her mother, brother and various sweet treats to comfort her.
Caroline avoided her issues with school, plunging herself deep into work. Drowning herself in English and music and drama.
SO WHEN Caroline's mother moved to Denver for a new opportunity at work, leaving her father behind, she and her brother are forced into a completely unknown place. Resulting in a weekly trip to the Grab n' Go next to her house for a sugary fix. Her favourite chocolate, KitKats happens to sit on the top shelf. Somewhere she can't reach. The unattentive worker doesn't notice her struggle, so Caroline braves the unknown and asks her pinball playing blonde boy to help her grab it while he's inbetween games.
Vance is faced with an opportunity to be different for someone, and when a pretty girl asks you to grab something from the top shelf, he isn't one to deny.
