The amount of pressure sinking into Xiia's palms could definitely pierce the skin. Which is the last thing she wants in this situation. Imagine, purple blood smeared across the smooth fabric of her red gown. She shakes the thought from her head.
The clack of her heels against the metal floors of the Destroyer hallway bounces off the walls. The queen frowns at the sound obnoxiously getting louder as she rounds a corner.
She slightly regrets the decision in a last minute change. However, seeing her reflection in the shined walls keeps her mind straight.
Maybe now he will see me as a monarch and not a soldier.
A smirk spreads across her face. Her nails scrape against the growing house of mirrors.
They stop when they encounter a door handle.
Then, she remembers what she was doing there in the first place.
Stepping back, she pulls her train behind her and the door whirls open.
The scene played out in front of her knocks out the newfound and short-lived confidence.
A glass room encloses the High General inside the infirmary. His body is linked to various machines that beeps and wheeze with every intake of breath. Chest exposed, rising and falling steadily, while a nurse finishes up wrapping the last bit of gauze around him.
Xiia had played out this image in her head thousands of times. What is laid out in front of her is far worse than what she could ever imagine.
The nurse gathers her things and makes her way out of the enclosure. When she finds the queen in the doorway, she isn't startled. The woman sets down the tray of medical instruments and tip-toes to the statue that stares at the sleeping body in front of them.
"This way, Your Majesty," she whispers, softly, pointing to the entrance of the glass room.
Xiia does not spare her a glance as she follows the nurse's directions. The closer she gets to her childhood friend, she sees more details.
The stitches etched into his collarbone.
The clotted blood on his knuckles.
Then, the bruise formed underneath his right eye.
When she makes it to her side, the nurse decides that it is better to leave the two of them alone.
The door closes behind the monarch as her eyes meander down to Cas' wrist, which were also covered in bandages. Her lips press into a hard line with the recognition of why they are there.
Without looking, she slips her hand into her general's palm.
Cas' eyes flutter open at the contact. "Hello, Your Majesty."
A soft chuckle leaves Xiia, "What did I say about using my name while we are alone?"
He smiles up at her, whincing slightly.
Xiia spots a chair in the corner of the room. Putting her mind to it, the piece of furniture silently skids against the floor to her side. Taking a seat, she squeezes Cas' palm. Her mouth opens, but nothing seems to come out.
Cas' head tilts, "I didn't tell them anything." His expression grows cold.
"That is not what I was going to say."
