chapter ten: will's still there
╚══════✮❁•°♛°•❁✮══════╝
DUSTIN PLACED A book of D&D characters down on the kitchen table while everyone else gathered around. Serenity placed one hand on the table and one on her hip, leaning slightly to better look at the book. Steve stood behind her, and Serenity was vaguely aware of the way the front of him was brushing up against her elbow.
The book was opened on a certain page. Serenity looked down to see a picture of a fantasy creature. Its head kind of looked like a squid and it had hands with long fingers. It was wearing a long cloak that had a skull on one side of it and a pattern across the front.
"The Mind Flayer," Dustin announced.
"What the hell is that?" Hopper asked.
"It's a monster from an unknown dimension. It's so ancient that it doesn't even know its true home. Okay, it enslaves races of other dimensions by taking over their brains using its highly-developed psionic powers."
"Oh my God, none of this is real. This is a kids' game."
"The Demogorgon was real," Serenity countered, the images of that freakish monster flashing through her mind. Hopper gave her a look, and she raised an eyebrow. "Tell me I'm wrong, go ahead."
Hopper didn't respond.
"Thank you, Renny," Dustin told her. "This is a manual. And it's not for kids. And unless you know something that we don't, this is the best metaphor—"
"Analogy," Lucas cut in.
Dustin stared at him incredulously. "Analogy? That's what you're worried about? Fine. An — an analogy for understanding whatever the hell this is."
"Okay, so this Mind Flamer thing—" Nancy began.
"Flayer," Dustin corrected. "Mind Flayer."
"What does it want?"
"To conquer us, basically. It — it believes it's the master race."
"Oh, like the — like the Germans," Steve commented.
Serenity pinched the bridge of her nose. "Oh my God."
