I entered Emily's office, anxiety forming in my mind.
What if she turned me away because of my obsession?
I knocked on her office door.
"Come in," I heard Emily say.
I opened the door and waved.
"Oh, Albeda! I've been expecting you. I was just finishing writing down the plan I had talked about!"
I let out a sigh of relief.
She hadn't wanted to turn me away after all.
I sat down on the couch she had across from her chair.
"Now, it's a short-term plan compared to some of the other ones I was thinking of. Would you like me to read it for you?"
"Yes, please."
For some reason. I found Emily's voice to be calming.
"First, I would like you to start wearing close-toed shoes everywhere. No matter where you go, whether it be work or someplace fun. And I want you to start wearing socks at home, too. After around 3-4 days, once you feel comfortable enough, then I want you to start deleting all pictures of your feet from your phone.
"After this takes place, maybe a couple days after, you should start taking down the pictures on your walls, one by one. That, you can decide if you should take down all at once or one every day. Does that sound good for you?" Emily set down the paper, crossing her legs on her chair.
"Yes, thank you so much."
"Will that be all for this session, or do you want to talk about more things?"
She folded her hands and put them in her lap.
"Actually, there is one thing," I said, hesitating.
"Yes?"
"I, well, I was photographing this couples wedding, and they are both non-men. This made me think, am I like them? Would I want something like that?"
"Hm...have you ever thought of being with a woman like that? Do you think you'd be happy with a woman or anybody who isn't a man? This is entirely your choice, and you have control over your life, after all."
I shook my head. "That's where I'm confused. Would I?"
Emily shrugged. "How about you try imagining yourself with a woman or non-man like this: going on dates, kissing a woman or non-man, and doing couple things like that. You can do this over the course of a few days and tell me what you think."
I nodded. "That sounds like a good plan."
"Great!"
"I'll see you tomorrow?"
"Yep! I'll see you tomorrow, same time. Here, take this paper with you."
I left the therapist office, questions floating around in my mind still.
Would I be happy with somebody not a man?
