"I'm off to the set, is there anything else before I go?"
Penelope stands in the doorway on her New York studio apartment that she shares with her old college roommate, Sarah. Penny leaned heavily on the doorway, cocking her head to one side, waiting on an answer. Sarah pulled her headphones to the side, exposing one of her ears and shouted, "Say again!?"
"Is there anything else you need done before I go?" Penny repeated herself. "No thanks!" Sarah shouted back even though Penelope was just behind her. Sarah's game sound in her headphones was too loud for her to care.
Penny rolled her eyes and walked out of her apartment and began down the stairs on the complex, the same she does every day. She goes through her process in her head, randomly thinking of how she steps down each step every day at a similar pace, touching the old metal railing in the same spot and pivots the same way each time. She nods at the security guard lounging at the decrepit front desk by the mailboxes. He was far too young and insecure to secure a building but the company that ran Springfield complexes didn't seem to care.
Penelope begins heading towards the subway. As she walked down the busy New York sidewalk, she glanced at every parked car she passed, getting a glimpse of herself in each one. She was a young black woman with a closely shaved head. She was dark and gorgeous with deep brown eyes. Her nose was one of her most defining feature, being slightly puffed, matching her lips. Her eyebrows were bold statements on her face reminding onlookers that it didn't matter if she was bald or not. She only thought about how her reflection never fit one singular window. It didn't bother her much but it was something she ritually noticed. She was a bigger woman with curves, skin rolls and folds where most women didn't want them.
As she approached the subway, she briskly turned and bolted down the stairs with urgency, allowing her body to move freely. She swiped her metro card and squeezed her way through the barred gateway and looked down at her phone to be reminded of the time. She was briefly early for the train but that was the way she liked it. She was awfully particular about her routine most days.
The train had arrived and Penny moved through the sea of New Yorkers to board. She sat down and felt as if she stood out for once in New York. This particular cart appeared quite demure and muted as most passengers she saw wore dark neutral colors and she sat there wearing a freshly cleaned bright white shirt. She didn't think much of it but it was a part of her routine of people watching throughout the past few weeks.(Image of character reference for Penelope Rodgers)
Penelope watched as her stop got closer and closer. "34th and 11th" she relayed in her head a few times throughout the ride. Once her stop arrived, she strutted out and upwards back to the city streets. She was roughly a 15 minute walk to Silver Screen Studios at Chelsea Piers from the subway.
She took her phone out and double checked the address, still in disbelief.
"62 Chelsea Piers, Lot 300, New York, NY, 10011."
Penny took a deep breath in and began walking. As a bigger woman she did not love the idea of walking for long periods of time before work but if it meant her dream began today, then she would do anything.Penny arrived at a large warehouse looking building with a huge parking area and many different signs.
