JUNE 1985

"Come on, it'll be fun," Steve said. That was two weeks ago.

"You don't wanna work with your best friend?" Steve pouted at her. Five days ago.

"There's only this one other girl that works there and she's pretty cool, I think you two will get along," Steve said, still trying to persuade her. Three days ago.

Heather wished she had asked Steve for the girl's name, then maybe she would not have applied for the damn Scoops Ahoy! job. Now, she was going to be trained by fucking Robin Buckley aka her ex from 7th grade. It wasn't as if they broke up on bad terms, it was the opposite actually, but they did stop being friends just because Heather joined the cheer team and was adopted by the popular crowd. Meanwhile, Robin joined band and soon their friendship fell apart due to the separate crowds that they ran with. Heather never imagined she would cross paths with Robin again, much less via King Steve. In truth, she felt guilty for abandoning her friend. She really liked Robin, and even if their romantic relationship didn't work out, she still valued her as a friend. Until, she joined the dark side and started caring about high school and its societal structure.
Now, about to start senior year, she really didn't care about that anymore. When King Steve had fallen from grace, he was actually happier with himself and that inspired Heather; she wanted to be happy without caring about stupid things like popularity. She swore to herself that senior year would be different. I guess it starts today, she thought. She took a deep breath and entered the store. The wind chimes against the door gave a tinkling sound as Heather pushed it open.

Robin who was serving a customer, glanced to greet whoever was entering, "Welcome in."
She looked up from the register and almost laughed out loud at this sick twist of fate. The summer job itself sucked, but at least it's a little entertaining.

The mall opened up and Robin got her first job, determined to save up money to finally get out of Hawkins as soon as she graduated. Imagine her shock when Steve "The Hair" Harrington was her coworker, but that wasn't even the shocking part—after getting to know him, she realized Steve Harrington was a loser. Just like her, the thought of it makes her laugh every time. Now, the universe was really making fun of her, because her ex-girlfriend and ex-best-friend —who was also close with Steve, might she add—had just walked in her workplace, dressed in the same annoying sailor uniform as she was.

"Ahoy, fellow sailor," Robin gave Heather a salute.
Heather, who was standing awkwardly and too far from the register, met Robin's eyes. They hadn't talked since they became distant in middle school and she hoped to God that Robin didn't hate her.
"Hey Robin," Heather greeted her quietly, walking towards the counter.
Robin raised a brow at the fact that Heather Henderson still remembered her name, "I'm assuming you're the newbie I'm supposed to train today?"
Heather gave her a small smile and nodded, "Yup, here I am."

Robin trained Heather for the remainder of that morning and, after an hour or two, Heather basically mastered everything.
"Congratulations," Robin said, "Didn't expect anything less from Miss Perfect."
She pretended not to notice the smile on Heather slightly falter.
"Thanks," Heather said.
The wind chimes made the tinkling sound again, announcing a new customer. Heather turned her head to look and Robin swore she saw literal hearts in the girl's eyes when her sight landed on the long-haired menace that was Eddie Munson.

"Hey, sweetheart," Eddie greeted her with a wink and a flirty smile.
Robin suddenly felt nauseous at the boy's sweet smile. She expected Heather to reject Eddie, but instead, she was basically melting for him.
"Hey, pretty boy," Heather teased, basically leaning over counter to get closer to him.
What on Earth is going on? Robin thought. First, King Steve and now Heather Henderson has the hots for the Freak? Is the world ending?
She headed to the back to take her break and tried to picture what the next school year was going to look like.
