The Fight

"I don't understand why you would do something like that?! Don't you care about how I feel at all?" I stared at the furious man in front of me, tears welling in my eyes, threatening to spill over.
"I told you. She exaggerated. They all exaggerated!" he yelled back at me, his fists tightening by his sides. I could practically see the anger in his eyes.
"Why would they lie? Why would Lando lie to me? He's my friend." I muttered, my voice much lower now. My head was hanging down. I couldn't match his eye contact anymore.
"I never said he lied to you. He was just stretching the truth of what really happened. I mean, yes, I did talk to her. But I was not flirting! And it was her that tried to kiss me. I pushed her off straight away. I promise you that," he rushed his words, desperate to get them out.

I thought about them for a minute, hung on them. Was that true? Could I trust him?
"Well...why would she try to kiss you if you hadn't been flirting? Or giving her some kind of mixed signals?" I say, now looking up to meet his gaze. His face had softened and he almost looked upset now, rather than angry.

"I promise you, I did not intentionally flirt with her."
"So you did, but not intentionally?"
"No. I didn't. I don't think I said a word wrong."
"How can I trust a word you say?"
He didn't like that. He stepped back and sat down on the stairs that he had been standing in front of. We hadn't made it down the hall yet after entering the house and arguing with each other for the past ten minutes.

"Why would she just kiss you?" I implored again.
"Listen to me. I was speaking with her because I had been introduced to her. A friend of Charles and Charlotte. You can ask Charlotte that because she is the one who introduced us."
"I don't care."
"Just listen, Y/N," he raised his voice slightly.
"She was introduced as a friend and I found myself having a conversation with her. I think she must've liked me or something because when she tried to kiss me it felt very random and very sudden." He stopped talking and was awaiting my response, staring into my eyes. He was almost crying now, too.

When I didn't say anything, he rose and walked over to me. "Do you trust me, Y/N?" He raised a hand to my cheek and began stroking it. A single tear slid down my face and he caught it.
"Yes. Of course I do," I nodded. I wiped my own eyes then and sighed. "I trust you and I love you. I just want to know that nothing happened. I don't want rumours to spin and I don't want people to believe them," I explained, staring back at him now.
"No. Nothing happened. Like I said, I pushed her off immediately and I went to find Charles."

We studied each other's expressions for a while, soaking up the silence. My tears were gone and he looked a lot calmer.
"I love you so much," he said, pulling me into a hug. "I would never do anything to hurt you, baby. I mean that." He held me tighter and I simply hugged him back, clinging onto him like there was nothing else in the world that I could do other than to hold him close.

"Max, I don't like us fighting," I eventually said. He laughed softly, resting his forehead on mine. I could just about see his eyes close.
"Baby, I hate it more than anything. I wish to never fight with you," he said.
"Let's agree to never fight then," I said playfully. He smiled down at me, pulling away slightly so he could see all of me again.
"Never," he said, his smile growing. He leant in and kissed me, a deep and passionate kiss, that sent butterflies racing through my body. Max was my boyfriend and nobody had better pull anything like that again.
