You live on a mountain, close, but not directly at the top.

The view in the mornings is beautiful, the sparkling dark sky mingling with the light of a new day peeking just over the top. Mornings are the time you make for yourself, slipping out of bed silently and out of the front door. The house is surrounded by thick brush, but there's a peak just a mile down the walkway, by a parting of trees. The drop is steep and deadly, and the rock protrudes from the ground in jagged, uneven angles.

This morning, before the sun rose, you did your daily routine. Slipping out of bed, leaving the house, and walking to your peak. On your way down the path which you trek slowly, you pick up small items - rocks, animal bones, or anything heavy enough to drop, before your toes are touching the drop. It doesn't scare you when you look down, you feel exhilarated as the cool air hits your back, taunting a push off of the edge. If the wind succeeded, you'd fall for miles - the empty shell of your body slamming and spinning against the rocks. You wonder if you'd die when you hit the bottom, or if you'd die mid-air. Both options seem to hold in your head as you're finally stepping back, deciding to give this day one more chance.

It's not as monumental as your body, but you toss a fist-sized rock off of the edge, watching it crack and spin in the air before it lands out of view. Next is a glass bottle from the cellar - an old wine bottle Illumi had poured last night that you picked up. It's not as exciting - it cracks upon impact, the shards rolling off of the rocks easily.

The sun is well on its way into the sky by now, and you've lost track of time long enough to nearly jump out of your skin when you feel a presence zero in.

"You're looking for me?" You don't have to turn around to feel Illumi stand tall behind you, hair probably up, still likely in his nightwear.

"Just curious about where you wandered off too." Illumi's thin hand is cool over your shoulder as he touches you gently. He's by your side, now, a cut smile on his face. "I awoke to a call from the main house."

"Is that good?" You two have been at the mountain for nearly two weeks, and the Zoldycks haven't reached out. Illumi says it's because they're cautious and busy, but you know about them - you know how closed off and particular they are. Maybe they thought of you as Illumi's partner, little did they know, you were merely a work partner.

"Well, they invited us to supper this evening." He turns from the peak to look towards you - you look back. "Take that as you will."

"Supper with the Zoldyck family?" It sounds faux as it rolls off of your tongue because it is simply unheard of. Being around a table with one of the most powerful families in the world sounded like the plot of an absurd story, not something you were living.

"Well, Kil can't be there, but the point still stands."

"I - well, I'd be honored, of course."

"Tonight at five, then." Illumi takes one step closer to the edge, looking over the edge in solidarity. "Do you come here every morning?"

You're silent as the breeze brushes past, answering his question mentally. You could tell him, yes, but you couldn't tell him that you came here every morning to throw your anger out of the window, to watch things that aren't your mind shatter and disappear so you're civil and sweet enough to be safe up here with him. You know that to help Chrollo, you had to help yourself. And you know that looking into Illumi's eyes still terrified you, so you'd do anything to keep him neutral.

"Most days." You finally respond. "The sunrise is so beautiful."

He hums, taking a few steps back before turning. "Follow me, I'd like to show you some things."
