Escape

Narrator's POV

Crumbling leaves and heavy panting was all he could hear as he was running in the woods.

005 had just escaped from Hawkins Lab like his best friend 011 had before him. He wasn't sure what he was going to do now. Being just outside of the lab's fence and seeing the guards and flashing lights, man it was really terrifying, but he couldn't stay there anymore.

005's POV

*Flashback*

A guard is walking me to the rainbow room but I can't help but think, 'why did she leave me here'.

011 and I were captured and taken here around the same time. She was my first friend. She is my sister, and the only person who makes me feel like I'm more than just an experiment.

Being stuck in my thoughts, I didn't realize we finally made it to the rainbow room.

I immediately went to the maze game. It was my favorite. I could sit alone and just practice my powers. Oh yeah, my powers. I can move things with my mind and control fire. That's what makes me feel so out of place here. They poke and prod me because I have two abilities outside of the spying ability we all share.

The maze game is quite easy for me. It helps that I play it every time I'm here. After completing the maze for the 3rd time in 5 minutes, I feel a hand on my shoulder.

"Hello 005. Are you ready for todays tests?"

Dr. Brenner, or should I say Papa. He is the worst of all. I am the only one that he seems to not love. He loves to speak with all of the other children, but me, it doesn't go past him asking if I'm ready for the tests they have lined up.

Knowing that it could be worse for me if I refuse, I just respond with a simple, "Yes Papa."

Now that we are in the testing room and the wires are attached to my head, it's time for the torture to begin.

"005, today we are going to practice fire abilities. So, I would like you to light a fire in your hand."

That seems simple enough, but not really. I'm the only one with these powers so they don't have anywhere to practice.

I sit at the table with my palm facing up, and I try to focus, but I can't. With my only friend leaving, my mind is foggy, and I can't get it. From the wires on my head, I feel a shock. I jump in my chair and grip my head in pain. I know they do this, but it still catches me off guard every time.

I try again and have no luck because of the previous pain in my head. I feel the shock get worse and I can't help my hold my head in my hands against the table top.

"Come on 005, it shouldn't be this hard. No one else has this much trouble." He says through gritted teeth.

I lift my head from the table and take a deep breath. I open my hand and stare. This time, a flame appears. It only lasts for roughly 10 seconds, but I guess that was enough to satisfy Dr. Brenner.

"Very good 005. Now let's try one more thing." He praises.

I here the door open and I see a cat in a vest. I cock my head to the side in confusion. I hope he doesn't expect me to...

"Now let's try to use the fire separate from your body. Light the animal on fire." He demands.

My eyes widen. There's no way he wants me to do that, it would kill the animal. I look at all of the guards in the room and they just stare back, waiting for me to do it.

I shake my head. "No. No no no. I can't do that, I can't kill an innocent animal" I choke out in refusal.

Another shock. Pain shoots from my head to my body and Dr. Brenner shouts at me in anger. I keep shaking my head, and another shock comes in. It's too much for me to handle at this point. Tears flood from my eyes.

I cave, and I focus. To Dr. Brenner's surprise, I light the vest on fire rather than the cat itself. The guards grab the scared cat and put out the fire.

I feel one last shock go through my body as Dr. Brenner gets up to leave the room.

"That was not what I wanted exactly, but at least we made progress." He says to me. He turns to the guards, "Take him to the isolation room. If he can't fully follow demands, this should teach him." He says as he walks out.

The guards wipe my nose and drag me by my arms.
Little did they know, I have been planning a time to escape, and I finally see my opening.

I look up to one of the guards, "Can you take me to nurse? My head hurts" I ask. He stops and looks to the other guard and nods. He then says, "It's alright. I can handle him. You can go."

The other guard nods and heads off. Now I only have one guard here, and it's time to get out of here.

I light a fire in my hand and grab the guard. His suit catches on fire, and he falls and screams. I run out the doors and down a corridor. I don't know where I am until I run out of a door and feel a fresh breeze.

I made it.

I run towards a fence and start to climb...

*End of Flashback*

I'm beyond tired at this point. My legs are sore and I can barely breathe. The lights and shouts of guards disappear from behind me.

I slow down as I come across a building. It's small and quiet. I see a sign and attempt to read it.

"B-Be-Ben-Benny's B-Bur-Burgers?" I sound out. I have never been taught how to read except for sounding out words and sounds around me. I go inside, and there's nothing, nobody.

I walk around and come across and room with cabinets, a fridge, and a freezer. The kitchen. I open the fridge to look for food. Of course I just happened to escape before lunch time. I'm starving. After looking everywhere, I find just one small can. I open the can and start to devour it with my hands. After I finish, I drop the can and look around. It's night time and I don't know what to do, so I just look for a spot to hide and sleep. I go outside and crawl under the deck stairs. I need to hide, but I also want the fresh air.

With dirt caking my arms, legs, and face, I start to cave to my exhaustion and drift asleep in the dark.
