I caught up to him and he greeted me with a massive smile. He tried to make small talk as we walked, but I ignored him almost completely. Finally I had enough. "Why are you suddenly nice to me?! You've hated me for so long and now you're like- 'oh hey I should stop being an asshole!' Like what?" I stared at him. He looked lost for words, but he replied after a couple seconds. "I just think this rivalry thing is useless, we can be friends. We don't have to hate eachother." He stared down at the pavement. "No. We don't HAVE to hate eachother, but god — I hate you! I tried to be friendly with you and you completely ignored me, what's the difference in me ignoring you this time? Huh?"
He was pondering on what to say, he looked like he has just lost the ability to speak. I felt a little bad, but not bad enough to admit it. He looked like he was about to say something but kept it in, he was silent for the rest of the walk.
I met up with Gwenny there and ofcourse her first words were "Ooo! You walked here with Robin? Surely something is going on!"
"No. It wasn't anything like that, I just bumped into him." I looked at him and saw him already looking at me, when he noticed me staring back he put his head down and his hand on the back of his neck, he didn't look shy or embarrassed. Just disappointed, in himself and in me.
"Gotta go guys!" Finney yelled as he ran onto the field. "Go finney!" Gwenny kept yelling. The whole match I could feel robins eyes on me, I didn't know why, but I could tell they were.
Halfway through the game I turned my head as quick as I could, trying to catch him staring. I did for a split second, but then his eyes turned to the field, acting like he was never looking at me.
Once the game was over everyone was congratulating Finney for winning. I grabbed robins arm and pulled him over to the side under the steps.
"Jeez, what are you doing freak?" He snapped.
"Im asking you why you were staring."
His face turned a light pink tint, not in that way, just in like a 'oh shit i've been busted' kinda way.
"Wha- I wasn't! I was watching Finney play. Obviously."
"Okay. Was he batting or pitching?"
"Uh.. pitching?"
"Yeah, okay."
"See! I wasn't staring" he turned to walk away when I stopped him again.
"Who was batting when he threw in the first quarter. And who won that?"
He stood still, not moving or saying anything, just standing there.
"Uhm.. David?.. and.. Finney won?.."
"Bruce. Finney lost. And you were really paying attention huh?" I stepped infront of him with my arms crossed.
"Sheesh, well sorry I don't pay attention to every small detail." He muttered as he pushed past me, elbowing me in the stomach.
I gave Finn a hug for his awesome pitching skills and asked if I could hang out with him and Gwen one day soon. He agreed and we decided to meet up on Sunday outside of school, then we would walk to his house from there.
As I was texting on my phone I heard someone yell "hey dork!" From behind me, I could tell that annoying voice from a million miles away. "Hey stalker." I replied, not turning to face him. He started jogging to catch up with me when I realised we had gone past his street. "Isn't your stop back there?" Still not looking at him. "How do you know where I live? And im the stalker. Wow."
"Oh my god shut up. We had to write down our addresses for the project you dumb shit, ofcourse I remember where you live." He laughed at my response, surprised I remembered. "What are you even doing if your house is back there then?"
