We pulled off a 36-27 win against Neillsville and my friends were jubilant as we raced off the field and crowded into the locker room. I'd managed to score three of those touchdowns myself, which had had my dad jumping up and down in the stands like he was on a pogo stick. Yeah, I hated football, but I couldn't help soaking up the cheers of the crowd and praise from Coach and my teammates after the game, and I decided that even my dad's embarrassing display of enthusiasm was pretty great. It felt like I was doing something right, something to be proud of. It also made me feel guilty, since I would much rather have been out in the woods somewhere playing the rock music I loved on my guitar.

I'd brought clothes along for my date with Olivia. After I showered, I stood in front of the mirror in the locker room combing my hair when Trevor walked in naked as a jaybird. He wasn't what I'd call fat, but he was massive. I mean massive everywhere. I averted my eyes and focused on my own reflection in the mirror as Trevor leaned over the sink next to mine and examined a zit on his chin.

"Jenna's folks aren't home this weekend," he said, shooting me a glance in the mirror. "So I think we're skipping Art's tonight, too."

I raised an eyebrow at him. "You're gonna hang out at her house, just the two of you?"

"Uh-huh." Trevor leered. "Been dyin' to get me some of that, and looks like tonight is finally my night." He grabbed a towel from the shelf beside him. "Are you and Olivia gonna do it tonight, man?"

I shrugged casually. "Dunno." I put my comb in my duffle, zipped it closed, and slung it over my shoulder. "This is only our first official date, so..."

Trevor snorted. "You kidding me? So what? She's been hot for you forever."

I rolled my eyes at him. "She wears the ring. And so do I." I flashed my right hand at him, indicating the silver band on the third finger. Inscribed on it in elegant script was the word Purity. Lots of kids in our church had taken the Purity Pledge and wore the ring as a vow to remain a virgin until marriage. It had been one of my dad's pet projects he'd heard about somewhere and had decided to start it with the youth in our church.

Trevor folded his arms across his massive chest. "You guys actually take that shit seriously?"

I nodded, my defenses prickling a bit. "Yeah. So?"

Trevor snickered. "Glad my parents never made me do that dumb bullshit." He wrapped the towel around his waist and headed for the shower room, calling over his shoulder, "Well, later on while you're dealing with a severe case of blue balls, you can think of me getting laid."

"I expect a full report," I called after him. "Gotta live vicariously, you know."

Trevor's response to this was a bellow of laughter. Trevor might think the Purity Pledge was lame, but I thought it was one of the best ideas my dad had ever come up with and had told him so. But if he knew the real reason why I embraced it with such enthusiasm, he sure wouldn't be pleased.

The date was all right to start with. Overall, it wasn't all that different from the many times Olivia and I hung out with our friends at Art's, except we had each other's undivided attention. Well, at first we did. That was until we were waiting for our meal and something dragged my attention away from Olivia's long-winded story about Mikayla Schiff's pregnancy scare.

"Would you believe that chick is so dense she thought douching right after sex would prevent getting knocked up?" Olivia was saying, but I barely heard her. A head of tousled black hair had captured my full attention.

Kyril, dressed in black dress pants and white button-up shirt with a nametag pinned to the pocket on the left side, was pushing a cart with a gray tub on it across the dining room. As I watched, he stopped at a table that had been recently vacated and began putting the dishes in the tub. His hair was tied back in a ponytail but a bunch of loose strands in the front had fallen free, almost obscuring his face as he worked with quiet and unobtrusive efficiency.
