On July 14th 2024, Supernova's Jaein has made history in Kpop by officially coming out as non-binary through a handwritten letter posted on the group's fan cafe.
"Hi, Starlights!
I know it's been awhile since I've last come on here to chat with you all but I thought now would be right time, especially after the release of our documentary. I hope you all are enjoying watching it because I know I am. I was so excited but also super nervous to share my experiences with all of you because I didn't know how I would be perceived.
I was definitely the most scared to talk about all of the gender dysphoria I was feeling because I didn't know how accepted it would be but after seeing many supportive comments online, it made me feel more comfortable to write an official letter about everything.
I want everyone to know that I am non-binary and that I prefer to use they/them pronouns. Ever since I was young, I had struggled to come to terms with my own gender because I didn't feel like I fit in as a girl but I also didn't think I was a boy. It wasn't until recently that I was able to find the right label for myself that I felt truly comfortable with. I'm also so grateful to have such loving members and seniors, who have been so supportive of me since day one.
I do understand that many people will still perceive as a woman because of how I look or dress but that's not who I am. I am neither man or woman, I am just Kim Jaein! Please try your best to use my proper pronouns (they/them!) and be respectful of my identity. Thank you again for always supporting me, Starlights and I love you all so dearly!

This letter comes about after the release of the group's documentary, which showcases all of the happy moments and hardships that they experienced in their first year as idols. During one of Jaein's confessionals in episode two, they speak about all of the gender dysphoria that they feel as a member of a girl group and how they are uncomfortable with how others refer to them.
The topic of their gender identity appears again in episode three when the members individually meet with their senior, Ateez' Hongjoong. When speaking to them, he refers to Jaein as she/her but they are quick to correct him before speaking about their gender dysphoria. The two share a heartfelt conversation and he encourages them to write a letter to fans about their true feelings.
Jaein has stated that it took a lot of courage for them to finally share this news with the world and they hope that their fans are still willing to support them on their idol journey.
