Depression: The End of the Line

FADE IN

EXT. HIGH SCHOOL — DAY

IT IS 10:00 A.M.. The sun is up. The camera is over E.M.A. High School. Students are talking, laughing, oblivious of what's to come. If any of them cared, if any of them made friends with her, there would be nothing to worry about.. The camera swoops into a window on the third floor, entering ——

INT. HIGH SCHOOL — HALLWAY — DAY

The students are walking in the halls. There are no interesting faces. The camera wanders down the hallway, trailing a path that someone would take if he had any hope left in him.

The camera blindly turns around and wanders into ——

CLASSROOM

The classroom's desks and chairs have been pushed to the side. There is only a ring of seats at the classroom's center, and standing by the whiteboard is YORI (17), short, worried, noticing that Charles is still missing. It has been a long while since Charles has shown up. In fact, it's been a long while since Yori has seen Charles at all. Yori turns to NIKKI (17) glasses, bold, wanting to watch others suffer.

YORI (nervous)

"Nikki? Can you take over for me? I have to do something."

Nikki rolls her eyes, getting out of her seat as she walks to the whiteboard.

NIKKI (sarcastic)

"Thanks for this opportunity, Miss President."

Yori passes the marker in her hand to Nikki. Once this happens, Yori walks to exit the classroom. The camera follows her from the back of the classroom as she enters ——

HALLWAY

The camera cautiously follows Yori as she wanders through the hallways. She pushes past the people, heading down to Charles's classroom.

Yori turns and puts her eyes to the door window of Charles's classroom. The camera wanders over her shoulder, peering into the classroom. There are a few people inside, but otherwise, Charles is missing.

The camera follows Yori as she turns away from the door, walking back down the hall. She picks a direction, walks in it, and starts looking for him. If she has to open every locker to find him, so be it.

EXT. HIGH SCHOOL — SCHOOL CAMPUS — DAY

The camera falls down from the branches of the tree, just like the tears falling from the cheeks of CHARLES (18), given up. He is flipping through a blank notepad, his pen spinning between his fingers. His tears keep flowing like the blood of a million past lives.

He has been trying to come up with a plan to save Yori. In truth, he wasn't really doing that. His mind was trying fruitlessly to pull a miracle out from it, but his heart had already decided it was useless. He couldn't even come up with a date to start from.

He had started from the beginning of the school year, then the beginning of their schooling, and then the beginning of his stay in the neighborhood. He had hung out with her, tried to make her friends, tried to eliminate or shut up anyone that hurt her. He even snuck into her window to keep her company in the night, yet none of that worked. What more could he do? What more could he try?

This time, he had started all the way from when he arrived in the neighborhood. He tried his best to approach Yori, but he knew her patterns. She was rarely allowed outside, rarely stayed long past school dismissal, rarely hung out with anyone. She had few friends that all backstabbed her, a failed relationship, failing grades, failing health... Charles learned all there was to know about Yori, and with every new detail he learned, it only reinforced that sole realization: it was all useless.
