Chapter seven

Demetri Volturi POV

I opened the front door. The sun had finally set. I pulled out my contact lens case and put my lenses away to recover my red eyes. I turned to Hailey who was looking outside.

"We can go to my house." 

 "Let's call a taxi?"

I started laughing.

“What? You didn't even remember the part during which I told you that we are extremely fast and strong? Come with me.”

We were heading towards an alley. I bent down and grabbed Hayley in my arms. She laughed and looked at me.

" What are you doing?” She demanded.

"Close your eyes, I wouldn't want to trigger an epileptic fit on your last human evening because we are going to move very quickly. I don't want you to raise your head under any circumstances because I want to avoid a crisis. I assure you that it will be very fast.”

Hayley nodded and rested her head in the hollow of my coat and I heard her breathing softly. With one hand, I kept her leaning against me. I started to run towards the house avoiding obstacles.

I could hear her laughing because of the wind flying through her hair. I had been running for ten minutes and I arrived near the castle. I put Hayley on the ground in an alley and she looked at me. She looked around her.

 "You're very fast!”

“So you will be, too.”

I stared at Hayley.

“Come with me. I will introduce you.”

She looked around her.

“Where are we going?”

“We are going home.” I told her.

“Ok... How many are there?”

“With us? About twenty. But our coven has about a hundred members all over the world.”

“There are a lot of you!”

I gently grabbed Hayley's hand. She stared at me.

“I hadn't noticed, how cold you are.”

“In effect. Since no blood vessels are functioning in us, heat is no longer produced by our body.”

We crossed the street on foot and after climbing stairs we arrived near the door that led to the main entrance. I opened the door for Hayley.

“ After you.” I told her.

As I closed the door behind me. Two guards appeared.

“ Oh, good evening Demetri.”

I stared at them as they looked at Hayley.

“All is well, she is with me. She will be part of the family. I'm taking her to see Aro.”

The two guards walked in front of us and guided us to the reception hall.

They opened the door in front of us and I noticed Felix standing in the corner. I put my arm around Hayley and walked with her.

Hayley's gaze drifted up to the ceiling. Every human who came here was always mesmerized the first time.

“ The details of the stone are surprising and again, I can't see very clearly.”

I nodded and she looked down as I walked with her and she met Aro's gaze. He got up with a sigh of joy.

“Demetri, your return delights me. I see you have found your mate.”

“In effect.”

Hayley turned to me.

“Did you talk to me?”

Ah yes, she didn't hear Aro speak.

“ I wasn't talking to you, sorry for misleading you.”

Aro stood up and appeared in front of Hayley. She jumped slightly. I could hear her heart skipping a beat. However, she remained calm.

“Good evening, Hayley. We are delighted to make your acquaintance. My name is Aro.”

“Good evening.” She said simply.

She looked around curiously. I met Alec's gaze as he stood beside Jane.

“I'm glad Demetri found you. He told you about us, I presume.”

“ Yes, briefly. I agreed to follow him.”

I stared at Hayley and looked up at Aro. He was bound to want to read her thoughts being intrigued by her presence.

“ I would like to know you a little more. Will you allow me access to your thoughts?”

“What ? How ?” She asked him.

“With a simple touch, I am telepathic.”

Aro held out his hand, Hayley looked at me and I nodded. She stepped forward and held out her hand. Aro grabbed her gently. I felt a shiver in my hand and smiled when in fact that was the feeling Hayley felt.

He remained a few seconds to stare at my companion and then smiled.

“ I understand now why immortality interests you. You are suffering from Leukemia and Epilepsy which complicates your daily life in an unpleasant way. I can assure you that these diseases disappear with the transformation.”

Hayley smiled at him.

“ I'm tired of suffering. I only have a few months left to live and I told myself that I had nothing to lose, I have no one.”

Aro smiled as he stared at her.

“ I know it dear, you are not afraid of death. Your absence seizures make you feel like you're dying every time, so you're ready to die.”

Hayley nodded softly as Aro seemed to think about it.

“Do you want to transform her Demetri or should Aro take care of it?”

I looked up at Caius who was talking to me while Hayley hadn't heard anything.

“ I don't think I can stay in control if I have to deal with it.” I whispered.

Aro had picked up our exchange and a smile lit up his features.

“ It will be my pleasure to welcome you to our coven to be Demetri's companion.”

Hayley stared at me and then looked at Aro. Her heart was beating rapidly but she seemed happy to know that she would be free of her illnesses because I could see that sparkle of hope in her eyes.

“ How does it work?”

I looked up at Aro, actually we were all staring at him. He was going to. A slight smirk appeared on his lips and I shifted to the side a little away from Hayley.

“Very simple! Like this.”

Suddenly he grabbed Hayley by the back and pulled her closer. He was attacking the back of her neck as we stared at them. I stood frozen as I heard Hayley in pain from the bite.

She squealed in pain and let out a scream as Aro drank her blood. I felt a pain in my neck and I felt her pain.

I slid my hand to my neck. I could see Caius smiling. Jane and Alec remained unmoved.

It only lasted a few seconds, he drank some of her blood and gave her the venom that would change her forever.

He peeled off of her as she let out a second cry and I watched her fall to the ground.

Aro was licking his lips and staring at me as I grabbed Hayley before she fell to the ground.

I stared at Aro who had his back to me.

“I’ll let you take her to your room.” Was all he said.

I lifted Hayley who was groaning in pain as she held her wound. I held my breath, the smell of her blood making me thirsty and ran to my room as Felix opened the door for me.
