"You sure you are okay?" Snigdha asked as she put the phone on speaker.
"Yeah, I feel better now... What I wanted to ask you actually was... Do you feel pain in your stomach sometimes?" Mayuri said from the other side."You mean period cramps? Yes indeed-"
"Aye, not period pain. You know... simply random pain, like something inside you is going to explode...""Na, I don't remember something like that for sure," Snigdha defended as her mother entered her room. "Acha, I'll call you later Mayuri..."
"Huh? Is it Mayu beta?" her mother asked with unexplainable excitement.
"Yeah, it was... Hey! Give my phone back!" Snigdha grumbled as her mother snatched the phone away from her."Mayu betaaaa!" she greeted all of a sudden.
"Ummm... Yes, Meghna aunty?" Mayuri replied.
"How are you? You don't come to our house nowadays!"
"Yeah, actually... Snigdha and I are both busy with our studies...""Snigdha and study? Well, that's rare..." Meghan aunty said as she looked at her daughter fiercely.
"Come on momma! You are embarrassing me!!!" Snigdha groaned as she snatched the phone and cut the call."Weird," Mayuri remarked as she got up from her bed and looked out of the door. It was morning already. Mahesh had dozed off sitting in the nearby chair. He went back to the bed and examined her abdomen again. There was nothing abnormal there now, but she recalled what Vedant had told her last night - 'Your body... It's rotting... It's dying from inside...'
"Looks like you are awake!"
Mayuri glanced behind to see Vedant standing at the door, with his bag in his hand. "May I come in, ma'am?" he asked playfully.
"Yes indeed, Doctor Vedant!" Mayuri chuckled as she made space for Vedant to sit. He removed a tiffin from his bag and kept it in front of her. "This is a medicine for the patient."
"Sandwiches!" Mayuri exclaimed as she opened the tiffin to find bread cut haphazardly with sauce and vegetables peeking out from all sides. It was evident that Vedant had made them.
"Yup, it was hard to sneak them out though, especially under the hawk eyes of Aaji," he said as he kept his bag on the table."By the way, it's 6:30 in the morning. What reason did you give this time?" she asked as she took a bite from it.
"The usual. Detention classes from the college. After all, it's quite famous for Future Angels School and Junior college Vashi..." Vedant explained as he sat next to her."Ha ha bass bass. Stop praising your college so much. The fact is Aaji doesn't actually know that detention classes are not for toppers like you," she said. That's when she sensed a bit of hunger in Vedant's mind. "Arey yaar, silly me didn't even ask if you had something in breakfast..."
"Arey na, it's okay," Vedant said as he pretended to act unaffected by the smell of the fresh bread.
"I know you are hungry. I can read your mind, you know," Mayuri said as she offered him a sandwich too."Why do you have this ability?" he complained as Mayuri stuffed his mouth with the sandwich. He protested it initially but eventually gulped it down with force.
"Phoenix fighter choking on sandwiches... Quite an extraordinary view, I must say!" Mayuri giggled as she offered him the glass of water kept nearby.
"You na... Just wait!" Vedant said as he frowned and snatched the tiffin away."Ayyy! Not fair!" she complained as she tried to get the tiffin back from him.
"Bwahahahahahaha," Vedant mimicked an evil laugh as he pulled back the tiffin, away from Mayuri."Vedant!!!!" Mayuri said as she punched him lightly on his face as she climbed on him.
"What the fuck are you two doing?!" Mahesh shouted as he saw them fighting.
They both pushed away themselves from each other and quietly sat near both ends of the bed.
