It was a reckless mistake," he whispered, his breath a mix of anxiety and urgency. I nodded slowly, my heart racing with disbelief and confusion. How could I possibly burden my best friend with this revelation? It would shatter her completely. After all, she and Alec weren't truly over yet. We spent what felt like hours deep in conversation, nestled together inside a colorful Kiddy tunnel at the playground, our laughter mingling with the sweetness of mint chocolate chip ice cream as dawn broke, spilling golden rays over the horizon at 7 a.m.
As the sugar rush began to fade, I crept back into my house, the chill of the early morning air still clinging to my skin. I slipped beneath the covers, surrendering to the warmth and comfort of sleep. Yet, that peace was fleeting! I jolted awake to the booming voice of my brother Jake, his tone a mix of cheerfulness and annoyance. "Get up! It's not time to sleep, lazyhead!" he exclaimed, his words echoing through the stillness of the house. Seriously, what could he possibly want at this ungodly hour? "Let's go somewhere! Me, you, and Jack!" he insisted with an infectious exuberance.
"Okay, can you at least let me get dressed first?" I mumbled, still tangled in the remnants of sleep. "I'll be downstairs!"
After a quick shower that barely washed away my grogginess, I threw on my favorite white ripped skinny jeans that hugged my figure just right, along with a breezy blue crop top that brightened my mood. I grabbed my bag and slipped on my shoes, practically flying down the stairs. "I'm ready! Where are we headed?" I called out, my excitement bubbling as I reached the living room.
"Bowling!" Jack chimed in, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "Let's go!"
When we arrived at the bowling alley, the familiar sounds of crashing pins and lively chatter greeted us. I excitedly picked out a vibrant, bright orange ball, a cheerful contrast to my not-so-great bowling skills. My brothers insisted I take the first turn, clearly eager to witness my not-so-epic, yet endearing attempts. By the end of the second game, they had utterly slaughtered me—my puny score barely reached the one-hundreds, while they seemed to glide effortlessly over the two-hundred mark.
"Hey, can we please go eat? I'm starving!" I whined playfully, clutching my growling stomach.
"Sure thing!" Jake replied, and a wave of relief washed over me, quickly replaced with hunger-driven excitement. "Where to?"
"How about the Burger Barn?" I exclaimed, my eyes lighting up with the thought of juicy burgers and crispy fries. "Yes! My favorite place!" I dashed towards the car, the pangs of hunger propelling my enthusiasm.
Spending the day with my brothers was just the escape I needed from the swirling storm of guilt brewing in my mind.
Later, I reached for my phone, tapping out a quick message to Karter:
Karter: How was lunch?
Kay: Good! What about you? How was your day?
Karter: Good! I spent it with my brothers too.
Kay: Sounds fun! Gotta run, talk to you later!
Karter: Okay, bye!
