"Let's go! Your sister is waiting for us!" my mom exclaimed, her voice laced with urgency as I hurried down the staircase. The familiar scent of fresh coffee and the gentle hum of the morning news in the background filled the house, contrasting my mood. "What do you mean by 'us'?" I asked, trying to keep pace with her brisk stride. "I've been taking you on errands everywhere since you got grounded!" she continued, her tone exasperated yet slightly teasing. "Okay, whatever! Let's just go already!" I replied, a wave of annoyance washing over me as I grabbed my jacket from the hooks by the door.

The ride to the mall was filled with a mix of chatter and the upbeat music playing softly from the car radio. I couldn't help but wonder about life's unpredictable turns and decided to ask my mom a question that had been on my mind. "Mom, how would you feel if someone young and pregnant came up to you?" I asked, genuine curiosity sparking in my voice. "What do you mean? Like one of my friends or something?" she replied, surprise flickering across her face, her eyebrows raised. "It's not necessarily a bad thing; it's just that being so young and still in high school? Honestly, I'm not ready to be a grandma yet. Why do you ask?" she continued, her tone shifting to one of concern. "Just curious," I shrugged, not wanting to dwell on the subject. "Oh, okay!" she said, visibly relieved as we parked the car.

"I'll be back, Karter," she called out, gesturing towards the entrance. "But I expect you to behave with your sister!" "Yeah, yeah, I will. Bye!" I shouted back, stepping into the bustling mall.

Spotting Grace near the entrance, I couldn't help but greet her with enthusiasm. "Hi, Grace!" I called out, waving. "Hey Karter! Let's hurry, they're waiting for us!" she replied, her excitement palpable as we navigated through the crowd.

"Okay! So, what color and design are you thinking for the dress?" I asked her, my curiosity piqued. "I was thinking either a light blue or an orange one with flowers—just not too short or too long!" she explained, her eyes sparkling with inspiration as we continued to browse the vibrant displays of dresses.

As we eagerly sifted through the options, a lady approached us, holding up a dress. "What about this one?" she suggested, smiling. "Nope! I don't like the color blue, and it's too long for my taste!" Grace responded with a playful grimace. "How about this one?" another lady pointed out, hoping to catch Grace's interest. "Too bright orange, and way too short," she shook her head decisively. "What about this one?" I chimed in, pointing to a dress hanging nearby.

"I love, love, LOVE it!" Grace squealed with delight, her face lighting up at the sight. "It's perfect! Let's try it on, Karter!" I couldn't help but smile as she dashed into the fitting room, anticipation buzzing in the air. "What do you think?" she asked, stepping out, twirling to show off the dress. "It's perfect! The blue is stunning, and it's just the right length!" I grinned, thoroughly impressed. The lady assisting us nodded in approval, diligently marking it down. "We'll come back in November for the fitting!" she noted, her clipboard at the ready.

Beep!

"Mom! I'm all set!" I shouted, my voice echoing slightly in the busy space.

"Great! I'm on my way!" she replied, her footsteps approaching.

"Okay, we're done," I said as I rushed towards her, feeling accomplished.

"I'll see you later, Grace!" I called, waving goodbye. "Yeah! And tell your mom I'll catch up with her one day!" Grace shouted back, a wide smile on her face. "You got it!" I replied, promising to keep her updated.

"Hey Mom, can we grab something to eat? I'm starving!" I pleaded, my stomach growling in response. "Sure! What do you feel like?" she asked with a smile, clearly happy to indulge me. "Wendy's, if that's alright?" I suggested eagerly. "Absolutely, let's go!" she replied as we made our way to the car.

Beep beep!

"Kay! Are you coming to the beach party tomorrow night?" I texted with excitement, my fingers tapping quickly on the screen.

"Yeah, definitely! I'll be there by seven!" she replied almost instantly.

"Awesome! And I might have Alec with me," she added, which sent a little thrill through me.

"Cool, see you then!" I said before my thoughts drifted back to the upcoming evening.

"Mom, can I go to Kay's tomorrow night?" I asked hopefully, trying to sound as innocent as possible. "Sure, but no wild parties," she warned, raising an eyebrow, her tone playful yet serious. "Sure, no parties, I promise!" I said, crossing my fingers behind my back to seal the assurance. "Just so you know, I'll tell her mom you're grounded and can't go anywhere without her," she laughed, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Okay, and thanks for lunch, Mom! You're the best!" I beamed at her, appreciating the little things.

"Anything for you, sweetie!" she smiled back, her warmth enveloping me as we headed toward Wendy's, a comfortable anticipation settling in for the rest of the day.
