"I promise, I won't ever fall in love with you."

You were supposed to promise back,

but no words were said, and I ignored that fact,

pretending to forget.

Months passed as friends

and I met someone else,

But I kept finding myself looking for you

in her words - she just doesn't

have the stars in her smile

or see the magic in the ground like you.

I almost told you today.

Out in the weed ridden garden,

you poked a small leaf and said

'if grass can grow through weeded grounds,

so too can magic in a troubled world.'

I could've correct such thoughts.

That it was,

in fact,

another weed growing.

But when you can see stars in pretty brown eyes

There's not much else to be

thought of.

You handed me a yellow dandelion.

It was nothing but a weed,

but the way you entangled it in my hair,

it could not have been more like a flower.

And I almost told you...

But then your name was called,

and the stars exploded with a light that lit your face

and I see you with him...

his kiss on your cheek burns red

as it lights a blaze in my chest.

As does the smile you send him

that should've been mine,

and I realize

that sometimes a promise must be broke.

I already broke my promise to you

a long time ago.

"I promise I won't fall in love with you".

What a lie that was.
