Run. That's all I said to myself as I huffed out labored breaths. Sarah was right in front of me. She was just out of reach. I could almost grab her shirt.

"Sarah! Wait!" I yelled out to her.

"No, nonononono! I can't do this anymore. It's too much!" Sarah said through sobs as she stumbled a moment before regaining her footing quickly and running again.

Just a few feet behind me was that dreaded, black, deadly monster. It tore through the halls, scratching the walls and cracking the floor in a few places due to the weight. The dim, flickering lights above provided only enough light to make out the silhouette of it and its piercing red eyes.

We had a head start, but it was faster than us, and catching up rather quickly. A deep feeling of dread pooled in my stomach, making me a bit nauseous.

We ran into the nearly pitch black cafeteria. The light fixtures had been covered by the inky black substance that had covered the entire campus. Taking this as an opportunity, I hid behind an overturned table to lose its trail.

I had expected Sarah to hide as well, but she kept running. And it was gaining on her. Fast. I needed to do something, but I was frozen in fear at what was bound to happen.

"SARAH! RUN!" Was all I could manage.

But I was too late.

Just as the words left my mouth, the monster lunged out and extended its arm. Time froze for the sixth time since this nightmare began.

Sarah stood still, her eyes wide open. She let out a violent cough, blood spewing from her mouth as she slowly looked down at her stomach. Her breathing quickened as tears spilled over, and she let out a silent sob, occasionally gasping for air.

The shock finally wore off, allowing her to feel the pain of her injury. Sarah's face contorted in agony, and she let out a blood curdling scream as the Mortifier pulled its arm out of her.

Her body hit the cold floor with a thud. Her blood pooled around her, and she let out a quiet chuckle that made her wince. Tears filled her eyes once more. Looking in my direction, she mouthed the words, 'I'm sorry.'

I painfully watched as life faded from her eyes.

'They're all dead. I'm alone now. Why? What did we do to deserve this?'

The Mortifier caught my attention as it moved to lean over Sarah's body. 'No, no, I can't watch this happen again.'

Quietly, I left the cafeteria as I heard the beast tearing Sarah's skin and muscle apart. Once I was out, I ran to the hideout as fast as I could.
