You crawled away from the wreckage, the fire licking at your skin. Your mind was fuzzy as you tried to understand the surrounding situation. As you glanced around, everything felt foreign. Even your body felt foreign. Your memories felt like they were fading as you struggled to remember how you got to this point.
Slowly you forced yourself to your feet and stumbled away from the fire, trying to reach a safe distance. Smoke obscured your surroundings, and you didn't know where you were heading.
As you slowly but surely managed to escape the wreckage, you felt your eyes grow heavy, and your knees grow weak again. Far away, you could hear blaring sirens, which seemed to grow closer with every passing second. You fell to your knees as your vision faded before finally passing out completely.
It had been years since the event; your memories of it and what came after had all grown fuzzy. You remember being passed around from place to place in the foster care system and what it was like growing used to a place and then being dragged somewhere else.
When you were around twelve, you were adopted by a mechanic and his daughter. When you came across a mechanics shop, you had been checking out the new town, and decided to look around. It had been one of your hobbies to learn about mechanics, and you thought you might be able to work on some projects here. There, you met Mikeala; she had been working on an engine when you walked up, asking what she was working on. She explained that she was having trouble taking apart an engine; knowing what the problem was from reading about it, you pointed it out. You two talked for a while afterward and agreed to talk more in the future.
Before you left, though, Mikaela brought you over to her dad, Colin Banes, and told him how smart you were about mechanics and that he should let you work here for some extra cash. You explained that you had foster parents who would probably try to stop you from working, but you'd want to be able to learn more.
You learned that Mr. Banes had applied to adopt you only a few weeks later. After passing a few background checks, he had finished the adoption process. And within weeks, you moved in with him and Mikaela.
You had to grow into loving them. It wasn't easy because you were sure they would give up on you like others, but they never gave up on you like others. They treated you as their own and made an effort to bond and take care of you.
You and Mikaela especially bonded. You were two best friends and instantly thought of each other as sisters. While both of you had very different personalities, you got along well due to your love of mechanics.
You had finally felt you had found a place and a stable home. You loved your family, and it finally felt like you could heal from everything that had happened to you. You just hoped that nothing would change and you'd be able to stay like this.
