We were running through the corridors of the great station, fleeing for our lives. The gate back home was in Sight, as a wailing siren sounded the cry of a self destruct in action. Batman, myself, and Nightwing beating our feet on metal floors as the evil machines started running scared for the first time.
They had caught our planet off guard but we were winning. So we thought, the lights and sound died back and we skidded to a stop.
"Shit, Shit Shit! Supe, are ya there? What happened!" Batman was checking in with his co-founder. "Shit, Clark if you can hear me break something dammit!"The bang of Batman's fist on the wall emphasized his thoughts. A decision being made. "Dick, get the kids out!"
"What NO!" I was given no choice. Bundled through the portal back to Earth by the seasoned hero, I watched as Batman disappeared back into the machine infested halls.
"NO!" I yelled, screamed, "You can't leave him alone there! The world needs Batman!" I begged, fighting vainly against an adult twice my size.
"Superman is still there, neither of them are going to die, they'll catch up!" Nightwing wasn't doing a good job of convincing, his voice sounded almost as strained as me.
Doctor Palmer welcomed us on the other side, "You did it! You did it, the Orbs are all gating out, whatever you lot did, it had them scared!"
"It was mostly Superman and Batman!" a villainous voice interrupted, he panted dramatically in spite of his power armor, Lex Luthor and The Brainiac looking exhausted after a long run. They held between them a large de-activated orb, easily the size of a beach ball, bright pink and apparently very heavy.
"That's Awesome!" The reverse Flash was there in a moment, then gone again, "I need to check what's going on!"
Exasperated, I followed, heading out to the elevator and taking it to the roof of the building. Sure enough, clear skies. Across the city buildings still burned, people mourned but the damage was minimum.
The conquerors death rays didn't destroy, not buildings, technology or infrastructure. Just organics. Huge swathes of the city decimated as a pink radiation erased not just people, but plants and animals from the ground in long controlled stripes. Like someone had been mowing the lawn.
Slowly the others were gathering up. The Alliance, The Atom, Nightwing, Superman and Batman, Lex Luthor, Brainiac and the Reverse Flash.
And me. The Fellowship if you would, a modern age alliance of men and monsters.
"What's that!" I blinked, then pointed to a bright spot in the midday sky out on the horizon. "Do you think that's Batman and Superman?"
"Not a chance, they're way to far away to return that quickly!"It was Brainiac who responded.
Another streak of light hit the sky, coursing across the far horizon. Then another arrived sooner, closer towards us.
I turned cold. "What's happening!"
Stumbling from the elevator, chasing us up from the labs, one of Palmer's analysts emerged, "It's the conquerors! They had a fail-safe!" She gasped, "I'm counting one hundred and seven world breaking objects appearing into collision courses for Earth, due to hit us in a spread over the next week! We're done for! Along with 470 smaller objects ranging from football oval to New York in size!"
"We Lost"
~ ~ ~
I hadn't touched this guitar since the Great Disaster. I had been a kid, I'd just started training to be Robin, after the death of the last Robin. My family had been upset at the news, but Dick and Bruce had been wecoming. I was too young, by many years. Younger than either the Robins before me when they started.
I wasn't Ready. I was babied the whole trip! There had been nothing I could do. Not to save Batman, nor my parents when, having used every technique to stop the asteroids cracking the planet like an egg, all we did was let it be peppered by smaller threats.
And now I played.
"I look at the world
And I notice it's turning
While my guitar gently weeps
With every mistake
We must surely be learning
Still my guitar gently weeps" I was in my apartment in the Titans Tower, the Grand Central hotel that stood as a mast above the Teen Titan's Command Center. This was a select audience, myself with my electric, a basic amp and pre-amp.Officially, it was karaoke night. Unofficially, I was being sappy. Starfire, Kara, Garfield, and Claire gathered in a closed group with Charlie accompanying me on a Bass. While Kori, aka Starfire had acted cheerful and energetic after the events at the Docks, it seamed way too much like a forced smile. Not natural. Yes, her people were free, but at cost. Her sister, who we'd only seen from a distance, was still missing and her people now roamed the vacuum of space, with no set homes. Possibly at the start of a rebellion against their former owners.
We were owed downtime!
"I look at you all
See the love there that's sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
(Look) look at you all".You'd think it would be a soft sad song by the lyrics. Like I would do that! This was a Rock Concert Baby! With music and dip and snacks! Raven and Lena were off doing their own thing, so we were having fun as we prepared for a Courtroom Drama!
"WOOOOO!"
" ChEEER!" yes, Starfire actually said "cheer" instead of cheering.
"MAN! Who knew you could be so cool, you're normally so stuffy!" we came to the end of the set, Charlie playing a little idly with his base on some call and response.
"So This is Guitar! We don't have instruments like this back home! It's mostly brassy and metallic stuff we play!" Starfire was explaining.
"Oh we NEED to take you to a rock concert Star!" Claire read my mind, casually sidling up to Star and nicking some of her snacks.
"Yeah! You're a Citizen of Earth! You need to learn our music, take it to the stars with you! And Now she's back, From out-a Space! I see you with a sad look upon your face, and I say, I say again! Do it You're WAY!" As Charlie belted out his mishmash of lyrics, I almost doubled over.
Laughing.
Right, that was something I did. "Yeah! We definitely need to do stuff. Only when we have time, we're behind on our training and in the morning I want to go over the case files Supergirl and Lena somehow stole! These missing persons cases!"
I'd still been playing in between talking, but my statements got groans from the assembled group.
"Ah Hello!" Garfield waved his hand, "We're not part of your team! You're not supposed to be talking about that with us!" He laughed, the boy had an infections snorty laugh that everyone in the group seamed put at ease by.
"Oh maan, sorry. You Lot are just, I didn't get to pick the Titans but I probably would have wanted you in. At the very least I'd like to know more about you and your powers!" I eased, putting down the guitar.
"Vetoed. Not happening. All three of us have our pasts and powers off limits to you! The Community would have a hissy-fit! We can Kareoke though! Turn it on! Turn it up!"
With a groan I turned around and switched on the Kareoke machine. Goodness knows where Starfire had got it, but she had.
