Robin
"So, like. You spent years training under that Bat guy from the 60s right? He had to be, old, when he was training you?" Okay, so my day with Starfire was out the window at this point and Miss A was annoying! Like, take the classic valley girl image from classic tv shows, add that cheerleader whiny voice, she had it all.
"Yeah. Batman starting heroing when he was 15, he was in his 60s when I got to know him!" I groaned. At least one thing, Starfire seamed happy, she floated along ahead of us, looking around. We'd used her Deep Dark to take us to a Fairground.
No, not that one, not one of the big amusement parks as pretty as that would have been. A small ground with a few basic rides and a mascot themed around a blue dog. "Then you're in a similar sitch to me. Never really knew my parents though, the Original is sorta my grandfather. He doesn't treat me that way though. Mum is long gone, and dad checks in occasionally." I found myself feeling quiet at that candid summary of her life.
"And now he's on trial!" I stated, getting a bland nod. I tried a different tactic - "So, how did you come to be with Bad Penny?"
That got a grin from Starfire and a groan of response from Miss A, "rrrrg, okay. So Bad Penny, E-Claire and Reviled all go to the same school as me! I used to torment them for being nerds. Now I torment them for being villains! Reviled outed himself to help me save the Original from the assassination attempt!"
"I keep telling you Robin. They are of good hearts, the Villain Club. Just cause we're on opposite sides, doesn't mean we cannot be friends!" I looked up, Star sounded far away.
"AAAAAH!" I screamed instinctively, "Put That Down Safely!" Starfire had picked up the carriage of one of those Tower Drop rides and was lifting it manually! "They're not supposed to be used that way, you might break stuff!"
I ignored the manic burst of laughter from the side-kick beside me, "Hahe-Oh wow, okay so you have wildcards on your team too!"
"It is safe! There is a rail to hold it in place, and soft things underneath!" As if to demonstrate, Star dropped the carriage, to the mixed screams of it's occupants, then caught and raised it again. My deductive brain knew what was happening here of course. She was distracting herself from thinking about her family, her people out there in the cosmos.
"So, you said this was the first hit of your dollies or something?" Suddenly Miss A was serious.
Taking a breath I yelled to Star, "Don't break anything! We're gonna talk to the manager!"
"I Wont!"
He'd been waiting for us. A tall, thin wiggly man with arms so long and lanky you'd wonder if he'd been a clown in a past life. He greeted myself and Miss A with calm aplomb. Right now he wore a pinstripe suit with the dog mascot printed all over the pants. "Mr Servy!" I said the name like 'Survey'. He corrected me with 'Servie'.
"Nice to see you youngsters. I admit when I got you're call I was confused. The incident with the dolls was nearly two weeks ago!" He took us through the carnival. "Two of them, showed up, chewed their way through hundred of dollars worth of plush toys, before we managed to shove them in plastic bags. Disposed of them in the trash!" He told us candidly.
There wasn't much to see at this point, a cold case. To Miss A's credit while she didn't check for threads, or look over the information like I did, she broke off and began interrogating the men who'd ran the stalls.
I let her queries of "How big, how did they behave, did they notice anything in the park was missing other then the chewed toys!" all valid questions that were answered honestly.
"No, there was no sign of super-villains. It was as though these things were being remote controlled!" was the apologetic remark.
"What would there even be to steal in this fair, that you couldn't get elsewhere I mean!" was another response.
"This isn't Warner Park, there's no major merch. The Blues mascot costumes might fetch a few hundred at auction, but the gear and merch here is all interchangeable with any the other Blues Fairground across the country!"
I collected and collated, then tracked down Starfire while Miss A did her best investigator impersonation. Starfire was sitting on the top of the center support for a Roller Coaster, looking at all the pretty lights and the clouds in the clear blue sky. I sneaked past the guards and used my grapple to pull myself up, tight-rope walking along a girder. "Havimg fun?" I called out, getting her attention. "Is there anything you wanna do together?"
She met me halfway, air-walking between the supports then sat on the girder I occupied. I sat beside her.
"I love that Earth is always so energetic, and happy! This was a good place to bring me to, with all the happy laughing and screaming and stuff!" We sat and watched the scene for a bit, until she bodily carried my now screaming self up to one of the coasters passing overhead! We had not paid to be on this ride, we were not strapped in and we had to cling on.
Rather, she clung to the cart, and held me in place tight beside her.
The rest of the time in the carnival was fun. We didn't stay long though, the next place we needed to check out was a major clothing store some blocks away.
